Schroeder YMCA took a commanding lead in the team race after Day 3 of YMCA Nationals, surpassing Cavalier Aquatics. Many of Schroeder’s points came from the top of the podium, as the team won half of all the events contested yesterday.
Stanford commit Alana Berlin started Schroeder off strong by taking the first event of the night, the girl’s 100 back. Berlin clocked a 51.33, comfortably winning and knocking .15 off her 51.48 lifetime best. This also ranks her 27th all-time in the 17-18 age group. Teammates Maggie Dickinson and Ari Zhao made it a 1-2-4 Schroeder finish by touching in 52.69 and 53.90, respectively.
Ethan Schutten and Anne Dickinson carried Schoeder’s momentum forward by sweeping the boy’s and girl’s 200 freestyles in new best times. Schutten won his heat by over a second, posting a 1:34.90. The 17-year-old University of Minnesota commit continues on a phenomenal trajectory in this event. Prior to yesterday, his best time stood at 1:37.67 from Wisconsin High School States earlier this year.
Anne Dickinson came out on top of a tightly contested battle with Somerset’s Colleen Bull. The pair of 17-year-olds raced dead even for the majority of the race, both flipping at 52.5 at the 100. Dickinson, however, kicked it into another gear on the last 50, splitting 27.5 to win in 1:47.95. Bull finished less than a tenth behind at 1:48.04. For Dickinson, this marks a new best time, undercutting the 1:48.65 she posted at Wisconsin Senior Champs.
Schroeder’s fourth and final win came from the girl’s 200 free relay. Berlin led them off in 22.75 before handing it off to the Dickinsons. Maggie split 22.42, the fastest flying split in the field by half a second, and Anne split 23.18. Ari Zhao brought them home in 22.96 for a final time of 1:31.31.
Though Schroeder passed Cavalier in overall points, the Charlottesville team still had reason to celebrate. The boy’s 200 free relay lowered its own YMCA national record from 1:19.88 to 1:19.83. Thomas Heilman led the team off with a 19.62, a few tenths off his 19.24 best. Up next, Will Browne split 19.69, then Jack Hathaway in 20.08. On anchor, Will Charlton delivered a 20.44 to be the only relay in the final under 1:21.
Heilman also topped the podium individually, turning in a 3:48.23 400 IM. His lifetime best remains a 3:43.83 from the 2023 Virginia Senior Champs.
Molly Yacoviello of York County earned her second win of the meet by going 4:15.05 in the girl’s 400 IM. The 18-year-old notched a new best time, besting the 4:15.79 she registered at the 2023 YOTA Classic.
The boy’s 100 back was a close one. Respective first and second-place finishers, Connor Johnson and Kenneth Barnicle, both earned their first ever 46s in the event. Johnson got his hand on the wall first in 46.88 with Barnicle right behind him in 46.99. The previous bests for the 17-year-olds stood at 47.64 and 47.41, respectively. Johnson swims for Lakeland Hills and Barnicle for Somerset.
