The 2025 Bergen Swim Festival kicked off with a head-turning performance by visiting Aussie superstar Kyle Chalmers.
Racing in the men’s 100m freestyle, the multi-Olympic medalist stopped the clock at 47.27 to turn in the third-fastest time of his prolific career.
He topped the podium by well over a second en route to gold, easily inserting himself atop the season’s world rankings in the process.
However, the runner-up performance by Sander Sorensen shouldn’t be ignored as the Norwegian set a new lifetime best and national record en route to silver.
Sorensen first fired off a morning heat swim of 49.03 to crush the previous national mark of 49.62 Markus Lie put on the books at the 2021 Norwegian Championships.
Flash forward to tonight’s final and Sorensen lowered it down to 48.86 to become the first man from his nation to ever delve under the 49-second barrier in the men’s 100m free.
Sorensen split 23.48/25.38 to turn in the new mark and make history for Norway en route to silver.
Additional Notes
- The Netherlands’ Tessa Giele punched a new meet record in the women’s 50m back, topping the podium in a result of 27.67. That checked in as a new lifetime best, overtaking her previous career-quickest time of 27.96 from 2023. She doubled up with a victory in the 50m fly, punching a time of 25.98 for gold. That was within striking distance of the 25.85 PB logged around this same time last year.
Also worth pointing out Sander is born in ‘07 and is only a junior. So he set both senior and junior national records today
