Northgate High School senior and Moldovan Olympian Alexei Sancov highlighed the Diablo Athletic League Championships, part of California’s high school swimming system.
Sancov was well off his own lifetime-bests, but won his two individual events by wide margins. First, he was 1:35.73 to win the 200 free by four and a half seconds, the only swimmer under 1:40. The USC Trojan commit is still well off his lifetime-best 1:32.80 from March.
Sancov also won the 100 free in 43.92, a little more than a second off his best. Sancov would also lead off the winning 200 free relay in 20.61 and the winning 400 free relay in 44.36.
On the girls side, a trio of swimmers pulled individual doubles. Sophia Cavalli of Campolindo nabbed the distance sweep, going 1:51.07 to win a tight 200 and taking the 500 in 5:04.42. Miramonte’s Sophia Kosturos was 23.57 to dominated the 50 free, and added the 100 back in 54.94. Her winning margin was 2.2 seconds in the latter. And Acalanes’ Emily Lo won the 100 fly in 54.93 and the 100 breast in 1:02.30, winning both by just over a second.
Lo also anchored the winning 200 free relay in 22.87, while Kosturos led off the winning 400 free relay in 51.18.
Can’t wait to see how Alexi finishes off his high school career over the next 2 weeks with NCS and State!
