Shortly after the conclusion of the regularly-scheduled prelims session, Indiana’s Rafael Miroslaw and Arizona State’s Patrick Sammon squared off in a swim-off. The pair had tied in prelims with matching times of 1:32.28.
The pair also had similar lifetime bests, but this time around it wasn’t a close race. Sammon was out a like a rocket, splitting 21.33 on the opening 50 free to Miroslaw’s 21.96. Sammon never relented, ultimately touching first, 1:32.40 to 1:34.29.
With that swim, Arizona State has three men in the 200 free A-final, as Sammon will join teammates Julian Hill and Grant House in the race for the title. All told, ASU led the field with 7 A-finalists this morning.
But that wasn’t the only swim-off the morning. Notre Dame’s Tommy Janton and Stanford’s Leon MacAlister went head-to-head after tying for 16th in the 100 back initially at 45.54.
In the swim-off, Janton went out in 21.59 to 22.08, then held on to win 45.12 to 45.59. Janton appears to have set the Fighting Irish school record with both of his morning swims, having previously owned it at 45.61 coming into this meet. Janton will get yet another chance at that record tonight with his place in the B-final.
4 medley for ASU
Dolan, Schlicht, Marchand, Kulow.
That might actually take the cake, that way ASU wouldn’t bleed out on the fly
Cal would be at least 2 second ahead after breast with that lineup, lol. Their only chance is Marchand going 48.9 and kulow going 40.9
I think Marchand is at least 2 secs faster in the breast, probably closer to 3.
Fly – he’s probably 1-1.5 secs faster.

Those times are conservative with the exception of Kulow. I’d bet Marchand could split more like 42.9 and Schlicht 51 low.

Colson has a PB of 45.02 so essentially same as McCusker but beat him out this morning in prelims
Sammon and House are faster than Kulow. Considering House’s current form, Sammon might get the nod? Unless ASU DFS’d Kulow in the 2 Free specifically to save him for the relay
Sammon hasn’t demonstrated front end speed, House might have a good 100 fly in him but I wouldn’t trust him unfortunately with his under performance.
Was Kulow over entered? Good question – are they saving him? I really think he could be clutch 41.0 seems really reasonable to me from him.
Honestly I know Marchand is historical in BR, but if ASU had another guy that could go 51 on that relay I really believe he would bring the heat on a Fly split.
Yeah, home slice Schlicht time trialed 100 br after PAC 12 and went 52.0. That’s 51.3 with some heat on a relay at NC’s. The only reason people think Marchand should do BR on the 4 med relay is because he hasn’t done a straight up 100 fly and gone 43 low.
I think Tommy is the first ND swimmer to compete in and win a swim off at NCAA’s. Congratulations. Go Irish tonight! The Irish have three swimmers coming back tonight plus the 400 medley relay which might be a first for them.
Who was in the historic 50fr swim off when NCAAs were at Air Force in the 60s? I think it was a 9 way tie for 5th when only 6 made it back in each. One guy got nothing but an alternate spot
4 medley – Dolan, Marchand, McCuster, Kulow. Give the freshman a lead and see what happens.
Cal would need to underperform (which they are not)
And Texas would need bad relays (they have good relays)
It’ll be a tight meet, but because ASU doesn’t have anyone in the Top 16 in the 100 fly or 100 br they are taking a massive “L”
Cal takes it if they throw down on relays.
Florida has to be the favorite here with their 2:59 from SECs
Cal will win the meet unless a relay DQ or injury.
Texas and ASU will battle for 2nd
UF and NCSU will battle for 4th
I have it on the final day not including platform diving. I have Tex and NCS battling for 4th
