WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Saint Francis beat both Youngstown State and Niagara in a tri-meet at Youngstown State. The Red Flash beat the Penguins 165.5-96.5 and defeated the Purple Eagles 135-127.
- Saint Francis had many top-three finishes, including wins in the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard butterfly, 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relay.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Red Flash started the meet on a high note, taking first and third in the 200-yard medley relay. Bridget Kurtzweil (Avon, Ohio), Oksana Horova (Kraków, Poland), Sara Turner (Enola, Pa.) and Anna Bernasconi (Albany, N.Y.) took the top spot with a time of 1:49.29. The third-place relay team of Inde Patterson (Moon Township, Pa.), Kathryn Tanis (Reading, Pa.), Laryssa Webster (Bradford, Pa.) and Reegan Brown (Acme, Pa.) finished at 1:51.63.
Aurem Pifarre (Balaguer, Spain) placed second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:42.90. She also took third in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 5:10.68.
Natalie Glessner (Elizabeth, Pa.) and Nicole López Kohlmann (Mexico City, Mexico) were awarded second and third in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 1:55.70 and 1:57.30, respectively.
Patterson and Kurtzweil found themselves in the top three in the 100-yard backstroke. Patterson took second with a time of 59.09. Kurtzweil placed third, clocking in at 59.49. Later in the meet, Kurtzweil also took third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.67.
Krysta Weik (Lebanon, Pa.) placed second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:07.09. She also earned third in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing with a time of 2:13.44.
Turner also took home two individual wins in the 200-yard butterfly and 100-yard butterfly. She finished with times of 2:09.76 and 59.75 in the two events.
Bernasconi won the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 24.48.
Horova placed second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.18.
In the final event, the Red Flash had two top-three finishes in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Bernasconi, Glessner, López Kohlmann and Horova won with a time of 3:36.04. Pifarre, Tanis, Brown and Sara Blanco (Madrid, Spain) placed third, clocking in at 3:43.42.

The Youngstown State men’s swimming and diving program defeated Niagara 170-92 as the women’s swimming and diving program fell to Niagara, 166-96, and St. Francis,165.50-96.50, at the Beeghly Natatorium on Sunday.
Three members of the men’s squad led the Penguins with two individual victories apiece. Gavin Webb swept the distance freestyle events, clocking a 4:39.59 in the 500 free and a 9:49.02 in the 1000 free. Soma Albert swept the backstroke events, winning the 100 with a time of 52.08 and the 200 with a time of 1:54.15. Aleksa Radenovic won both the butterfly events with a time of 49.81 in the 100 fly and a 1:51.75 in the 200 fly. Additionally, winning an individual victory for the men was Gavin Redden with a time of 46.09 in the 100 free.
The men also swept the two relays at the meet as the team of Albert, James Slessor, Redden, and Radenovic clocked a 1:32.69 in the 200 medley relay to open the meet. The men finished the meet off with a win in the 400 free relay as the team of Rares Druga, Kyle Mizell, Jasper Liekens, and Redden clocked a 3:07.56.
The men delivered a 1-2-3 finish in the 1000 free with Webb’s victory as Crispy Barton finished second with a time of 9:55.80 and Christian Taylor placed third with a time of 10:04.10. The men also finished 1-2-3 in the 200 fly with Radenovic in first, Jasper Liekens in second with a time of 1:56.13, and Joseph Wyatt in third with a time of 1:58.46. In addition, the men’s squad completed another 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 backstroke as Albert took the event victory followed by Dominic Bono in second with a time of 1:56.80 and Ethan Ferroni in third with a time of 1:57.99.
James Slessor picked up two second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, clocking a 57.42 in the 100 breast and a 2:09.40 in the 200 breast. Redden also finished second in the 50 free with a time of 21:14.
Kyle Mizell and Dominic Panozzo earned third-place finishes as Mizell clocked a 53:10 in the 100 back and Panozzo delivered a time of 58.92 in the 100 breast. Druga picked up two third-place finishes, swimming a time of 21.23 in the 50 free and 47.86 in the 100 free. Taylor also placed third in the 500 free with a time of 4:52.38.
Leading the women’s team was Miriam Frass who won both the 200 and 1000 freestyle. Frass clocked a 1:55.59 in the 200 free and a 10:38.12 in the 1000 free. In addition, she finished second in the 500 free with a time of 5:08.92.
Allison Ramirez Romero also picked up a second-place finish in the 100 fly with a time of 59.92.
Three other women’s swimmers picked up third place finishes. Hailey Clark clocked a 10:52.05 in the 1000 free to place third while Oliwia Kaniak finished third in both the 100 and 200 breast, clocking a 1:07.75 in the 100 and a 2:28.01 in the 200. Madelyn Mahoney also picked up two third place finishes, clocking a 25.28 in the 50 free and a 54.79 in the 100 free.
The Penguins will be next in action on Saturday as they take the short trip up north to compete against Cleveland State at the Busbey Natatorium in Cleveland, Ohio.

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO – The Niagara men’s and women’s swimming teams took to the Beeghly Natatorium Sunday afternoon. The women competed against both YSU and Saint Francis (Pa.), defeating the host 166-99, while falling to SFU by a narrow margin, 135-127. The men fell to the host Penguins, 170-92.
Men’s Recap
The men’s 200 medley relay started the meet off strong for the Purple and White, posting a second-place finish as Reid Tichy, Sean Finley, Gio Germano, and Nathan Dragon finished with a time of 1:32.85.
Dragon and Finley would follow up their performances in the relay with individual wins. Dragon won the 200 free with a time of 1:43.95, while Finley won the 100 breast with a time of 57.15.
Tichy collected a second place showing in the 100 back with a time of 52.36, just under three-tenths of a second off the winner. The junior would also finish second in the 100 free with a time of 47.61.
Dragon would add his second individual win with a time of 21.03 in the 50 free. Finely would also pick up a second win as the junior won the 200 back with a time of 2:08.24. The two would go on to finish second in each of their respective final races of the day as Dragon collected a time of 4:39.96 in the 500 free and Finely a 1:56.40 in the 200 IM.
Germano added to NU’s top-two finishes on the day earning second in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 51.49.
Tichy, Jake Wade, Germano, and Levi Morgan earned second place in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:12.06.
Women’s Recap
Freshman Natalie Killion continued her hot start to the season, earning Niagara’s first win of the afternoon with a time of 56.57 in the 100 back. Fellow freshman Alaina Pitton would follow suit with a win in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.17. Killion and Pitton would go on to win the 200 back and breast, respectively, sweeping their events. Killion posted a time of 2:03.75 to win the 200 back, while Pitton’s time of 2:23.13 won the 200 breast.
Niagara ended up taking the top two spots in the 200 back and breast events as freshman Baileigh Racky placed second with a time of 2:09.30 in the 200 back, while junior Megan Smith followed Pitton with a time of 2:26.13 in the 200 breast.
Killion picked up her third win of the day in the 500 free with a time of 5:04.41.
Sophomore Chloe Vlaeminck would finish second in the 200 fly with a time of 2:12.64, edging out freshman teammate Mary Carl who finished third with a mark of 2:12.98.
Junior Paige South earned second in the 50 free with a time of 24.54, before winning the 100 free with a time of 53.37.
Smith, who finished second in the 200 breast earned a win in the 200 IM with Vlaeminck earning second place. Smith edged out her sophomore teammate with a time of 2:10.94. Vlaeminck touched the wall in 2:12.44.
In the 400 free relay, NU finished second behind SFU. South, Claire Gorton, Carl, and Pitton finished the event in a time of 3:38.24.

The Niagara women host Stonehill on Saturday, Nov. 4, while the men’s team won’t be back in action until both teams travel to Cleveland, Ohio for the Magnus Invite.
