The city of Rome is officially out of the running for host of the 2024 Olympic Games, as a letter from IOC President Thomas Bach has recognized their official withdrawal following the city council’s vote.
In the letter, Bach thanked CONI, the Italian Olympic committee, for their work on the Olympic bid, and extended that gratitude to the Italian national government, regional government, and citizens of Italy. He also noted that the IOC recognized that the decision to withdraw their candidacy was motivated by factors outside of the Olympic movement.
The IOC has taken note of the withdrawal of the Candidature of Rome for the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad, following the vote of the City Council. Based on the information we have received over the last few days, it has been clearly demonstrated that the City Council’s decision was politically motivated for reasons beyond the Olympic project.
SwimSwam earlier reported that Rome’s city council passed a motion in support of Mayor Virginia Raggi’s wish to withdraw the city from consideration. The Italian 5-Star Movement has protested the possibility of Rome hosting the Games, citing their belief that it would encourage corruption and increase the income gap by benefiting large construction firms.
Now that Rome is out of the running, the remaining candidates for host of the 2024 Olympics are Los Angeles, Paris, and Budapest.
