Rio Torch Relay Day 82: Four Cities In Southern São Paulo

On each day of the official Olympic torch relay, carrying the Olympic flame to the Olympic cauldron in Rio de Janeiro, the Rio2016 Facbeook page is posting brilliant and spectacular images from one of the world’s unique and most beautiful landscapes. Each day until August 5th, we will bring you these stunning images.

The torch hit four more cities in São Paulo on day 82, travelling through São Bernardo do Campo, Santo Andre, Guarulhos and São Caetano do Sul. All four cities are within 40 km of each other just east of the capital city of São Paulo.

It started the day out in São Bernardo do Campo, a city of over 800,000 people that is part of the industrial “ABC” region in Brazil. It is known for it’s important private universities including Universidade Metodista de São Paulo and Centro Universitario da FEI.

It then went to Santo Andre, which is alos in the ABC region. The city became known nationally in 2002 when mayor Celso Daniels was assassinated, murder which remains unsolved to this day. It continued to Guarulhos, the second most populous city in the state with over 1.3 million people.

The torch finished the day in São Caetano do Sul, Brazil’s highest per capita income city and the city with the highest Human Development Index. With low illiteracy rates and well-maintained infrastructure, it is has the best standard of living in the country.
