FAIRFIELD, CT – The Rider University women’s swimming and diving team earned its first two victories of the season Saturday, topping Siena 188.5-110.5 and Sacred Heart 179-121 in a tri-meet. The Broncs improve to 2-4 on the season. The Saints move to 3-4-1 and the Pioneers are now 1-4-1.
The Bronc women won 10 events in the meet.
Rider started quickly with a win in the 200-medley relay. Chastity Ruatos (Lodi, NJ/Immaculate Conception), Sarah Fondacaro (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Maddie McSorley (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy), and Lea Opdyke (Ocala, FL/West Port) combined for a swim of 1:50.36.
In the 1,000-free, Casey McLaughlin (Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) and Mallory Mead (Middle River, MD/Dulaney[Oklahoma Christian]) finished one-two, stopping the clock at 10:42.27 and 10:47.35.
The Broncs got another one-two finish in the 100-back. Ruatos and Mead touched the wall at 59.85 and 1:00.34, respectively. Mead and Ruatos flipped places in the 200-back, with Mead taking the win in 2:08.24 and Ruatos following in 2:12.35.
Hannah Yemec (Bluffton, SC/May River) and McLaughlin swam one-two in the 200-fly, swimming 2:06.16 and 2:10.95, respectively. Yemec then swam one-two in the 100-fly with Alexa Torres (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst), touching the wall at 57.62 and 1:00.12, respectively.
Suriya Pathammavong (Rochester, NY/Churchville Chili) won the 200-breast with a time of 2:27.86.
Opdyke and Megan Smith (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) were one-two in the 500-free, swimming 5:13.44 and 5:15.74.
McLaughlin and Gianna Farina (Easton, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) swam 4:37.91 and 4:42.63 to take first and second in the 400-IM.
The Broncs closed out the meet with a win in the 200-free relay. Fondacaro, Yemec, Opdyke, and McSorley stopped the clock at 1:39.51 for the victory.

MILFORD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women’s swim team hosted Rider and Siena in a tri-meet this afternoon at McCann Natatorium. The Pioneers tied with Siena, 150-150, while falling to Rider, 171-121. Sophia Velleco, Rosemery Nieto, and Olivia McNicholas each picked up a win in the home tri-meet.
The Pioneers took to the pool for the one-meter board, 13 individual events, and a pair of relays.
First-year Sophia Velleco placed first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time 1:56.07.
Junior Rosemery Nieto led the Pioneers to a win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:07.42. Nieto finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:28.12.
In the one-meter-five dive voluntary, senior Olivia McNicholas came out on top with a score of 170.62, while senior Natalie Carbone finished third with a score of 148.88.
McNicholas also came in second in the one-meter-six dive voluntary, scoring 239.45.

MILFORD, CT – Siena Swimming & Diving’s Fall 2023 campaign continued with a tri-meet battle in Connecticut on Saturday afternoon.
The Saints dropped a 188.5-110.5 decision to MAAC foe Rider, while swimming host Sacred Heart to 150-150 tie at McCann Natatorium in Milford, CT. The draw went down as the third in the 25-year history of the program and the first since the 2013-14 season.
Rider claimed ten individual events on the day, while Siena graduate student Rory Kalac took wins in the 50 free (24.27) and 100 free (53.78) to lead the Saints.
Reigning MAAC Diver of the Week Talia Spenziero placed first in a crowded eight-diver field in a six dive one-meter diving with a score of 218.70, while finishing second in five dive one meter-diving with 154.95.
Freshman Mea Amedio placed second in the 50 free (25.13) and third in the 100 back (1:00.81), while senior Audrey Shultz took third in both the 1000 free (11:01.21) and the 200 breast (2:30.16).
Freshman Mary Ellen Stratman swam the second-fastest time in the 200 back for the team this season at 2:12.48, while junior Kylie Carter did so in the 200 breast with a time of 2:31.08.
The Saints also took home a pair of second place relays, with the team of Amedio, junior Olivia Martin, freshman Camryn Raines, and Kalac swimming a 1:50.82 in the 200 medley relay, and the group of Amedio, Carter, freshman Natalie Blume, and Kalac recording a 1:39.58 in the 200 free relay.
Siena’s fall season will continue on the road when the Saints head to Long Island to face Stony Brook on Saturday, November 18 at Noon.
