MIAMI, Fla. – The Rice swim team completed a three-meet weekend sweep by defeating Conference USA rival Florida International (102-100) and American Athletic foe Tulane (123-76) Saturday at the annual Dual-A-Pool-Ooza in Miami, Fla.

The Owls backed up the gritty victory over defending Summit League champion Denver on Friday with two more dual wins on a long day of competing Saturday. Even after taking the 200-yard medley relay (1:44.30) and finishing 1-2 in both the 200- and 50-butterfly thanks to the duos of Brittany Bui & Rebecca Brandt, and Madison Howe and Bui (respectively), FIU would not go away so easily in its home pool. Rice closed out the meet winning the final event, the 200-freestyle relay with a 1:34.67. The Blue & Gray had posted a steady time to win the sprint relay comfortably, but that still was not enough to secure the meet victory.

“The FIU meet came down to the last relay,” Rice head coach Seth Huston explained, “and it was actually the third place finish of our ‘B’ relay that put us over the scoring hump to win the meet. Our depth was on display today.”

Rice battled and beat the Golden Panthers, the defending C-USA Champions, in their home pool by a narrow two-point margin. The Owls then returned a few hours later and rolled to a convincing 123-76 victory over Tulane. Against the Green Wave Rice won seven of the meet’s ten swim events. Coach Huston liked the theme of team-wide contributions from up and down the roster.

“I am really proud of Becca Evans, Brittany Bui and Madison Howe with some big wins that put us in position to win all three meets this weekend,” coach Huston said. “We also had some unsung heroes today, like Ellery Parish, Becca Brandt, Addie Armistead and Claire Therien. They all had quality swims that were difference-makers today.

“This is a great day for our team,” the coach added. “We got the three-fer!”

MIAMI – The Tulane University swimming and diving team concluded competition Saturday afternoon at the fifth annual Dual-A-Pool-Ooza event with a 123-76 loss to Rice. The two-day event was held on the campus of Florida International University at the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.

Tulane finished the afternoon session with four winning performances, including another first-place finish in diving.

“I think we had a good all-around event, but I know our team is a little tired right now, but despite being as tired as they were they still put in some really good efforts,” head coach Leah Stancil said.

Junior Kate McDonald led the way with a pair of winning performances, as she claimed the 50-yard breaststroke (30.10) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.70). With her two victories, McDonald has now nine events this year.

Freshman Lilly Byrne also collected a victory for the Green Wave as she claimed the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:50.94.

“Next week we are going to get back to working on technique,” Stancil said. “We have three weeks to prepare for the Phill Hansel Invitational in the middle of November. We have some time to fine tune a few and I’m excited for next event.”

In the diving events, Tulane earned 1-2 finishes courtesy of sophomore Anne Marie Kenny and freshman Gabby Hebert, as they finished first and second, respectively.

“Our divers definitely faced some adversity this weekend competing,” Tulane diving coach John Sirmon said. “Our team also worked in some new dives for the first time and it was fantastic to see them handle it well. We are in a great place moving into our midseason invitational and I think we can expect some great things out of our divers this season.”
