How It Happened
Rhode Island won 12 of the 14 scored events as it put forth a dominant effort against Coast Guard and Springfield College in a tri-meet Saturday afternoon.
The Rams (3-0) got two individual wins each from Maddie Tetreault, Rylee Kelly and Lily Hsu. For the second meet in a row, Tetreault won both the 1000 freestyle and the 200 backstroke, a feat she also pulled off at Siena on Oct. 14. Tetreault won the 1000 in a time of 10:53.59, leading a 1-2-3 finish for Rhode Island in which freshmen Cate Carboni and Addi Wood took second and third, respectively. Tetreault later added a win in the 200 backstroke when she edged teammate Kelsey McMenemy at the wall. Tetreault finished in 2:09.41, just .36 seconds before McMenemy.
Kelly won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.60. She came back and took the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:11.38.
Hsu won both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. Her score of 248.35 led a 1-2-3 finish for URI in the 1-meter event. Olivia Winslow was second with a score of 235.0, followed by Carleigh Schlissel’s 220.10. In the 3-meter, Hsu won with a 247.85. Schlissel was second in the event with a 220.25.
Standouts From the Pool
- The team of Kelsey McMenemy, Hannah Benavides, Ella Hacker and Abby Zadorozny got Rhode Island off to an early lead, winning the 400-yard medley relay in the first race of the day. Rhody’s quartet finished in a time of 3:58.38.
- URI also took second in the event with the team of Sarah Koenig, Logan Norrid, Julianna Tyler and Megan Huntley.
- Hannah Benavides dominiated the 200 breaststroke, beating the field by more than five seconds with her time of 2:22.90.
- Julianna Tyler won the 200 butterfly for the second straight meet, finishing in 2:06.74. Teammate Ella Hacker was second in 2:08.80.
- Hacker later won the 100 butterfly in a time of 58.58, just ahead of fellow Ram Abby Zadorozny (59.60).
- Megan Huntley picked up her first career win, taking the honors in the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.13.
- The Rams took three of the top five spots in the 100 backstroke, as Kelsey McMenemy was second, Jackie Triiglia took third and Anna Bodycoat placed fifth.

KINGSTON, RI. – The Women’s Swimming and Diving teams managed a split on their opening weekend with host, Division I, University of Rhode Island and NEWMAC opponent Springfield College. The host Rams won with a score of 183 to Coast Guard’s 108. The Bears beat the Springfield Pride 163-132.
Some strong showings from Coast Guard, include first year Madelyn Paxton winning the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:00.51 as well as leading off the 400 medley relay that outpaced Springfield’s relay. Paxton also swam to a quick 2:12.70 in the 200 IM. The relay team of Paxton, junior Tailyn Schaufelberger, junior Grace Keogh, and sophomore Masen Karsten finished in 4:04.13.
The double dual meet was highlighted with some encouraging early season performances by a strong youth movement. First year Jaida Lippy placed third in the 1000 freestyle by negative splitting the event in a time of 11:08.31. Also posting strong swims was first year Megan Doubrava in the 500 freestyle (5:20.18) and the fastest regular season first year CGA 200 butterfly in program history with a time of 2:11.43.
Junior Ellie Hiestand finished the 200 breaststroke in 2:27.91 in second place, a personal best for an in-season time.
The women will travel to Worcester Polytechnic Institute on November 3rd for a multi school meet against WPI, Babson College, Brandeis University and Smith College.

Kingston, R.I. – October 28, 2023 – The Springfield College women’s swimming and diving team kicked off the 2023-24 season on the road with a tri-meet against Coast Guard and the University of Rhode Island. URI bested the Pride, 196-99, while Coast Guard was victorious by a 163-132 margin.
In the 400-yard medley relay to start the meet, Springfield’s best time came in a 4:05.16 thanks to the combined efforts of Carolyn Blenk (New Rochelle, N.Y.), Nina Lamb (Killingworth, Conn.), Erin Kelaher (Tucson, Ariz.), and Natalie Chamberlin (Ellington, Conn.).
Kay Shen (Hong Kong) took first-place points as she sprinted to a win in the 50 free in 24.23, while also turning in runner-up performances in the 200 free in 1:58.43 and the 100 free with a 53.60. Lamb would also claim first place in the 100 breast with a 1:06.94 and later took third in the 200 breast after touching in 2:28.59.
Emma Baumhauer (Fairport, N.Y.) registered a 1:02.80 in the 100 back and a 2:15.42 in the 200 back, while Elizabeth Athanas (Manchester, Mass.) recorded a 2:23.50 in the 200 fly and Kelaher completed the 100 fly in 1:02.23. Blenk raced the 200 IM in 2:17.15 and Emma Savoie (New Milford, Conn.) had the Pride’s best time in the 1,000 free with a 11:15.77 and also notched a 5:33.89 in the 500 free.
On the three-meter board, Elizabeth Santos (Chicopee, Mass.) tallied a 220.15 and scored a 202.35 on the one-meter.
Springfield closed out the meet with a win in the 200 free relay as Shen, Lamb, Chamberlin, and Kelaher delivered a 1:38.93.
The Pride will compete next against MIT at home on November 4.
