How It Happened
Rhode Island won 11 of 16 events to dominate Siena 181-114 in the season-opening meet for the Rams Saturday afternoon.

URI (1-0) completed 1-2-3 sweeps in four different events on the day. The Rams began to pull away after the sixth event of the meet, when Julianna TylerMary McCormick and Emma Lee took the top three spots in the 200-yard butterfly. Tyler won with a time of 2:07.79, followed by McCormick (2:10.42) and Lee (2:12.39).

It was the first of three straight 1-2-3 finishes for Rhode Island. Next up was the 50-yard freestyle, won by Avery Potyrala (25:06). She was followed closely by teammates Quinn Frost (25:11) and Abby Zadorozny (25:17).

The 1-meter dive gave Rhode Island a third straight sweep. Lily Hsu led the way with a score of 275.40, followed by Olivia Winslow (248.93) and Amelia Kloss (217.43). Two events later, the Rams got their fourth 1-2-3 finish of the meet when freshman Lauren Biglow won her collegiate debut in the 200 backstroke. Her time of 2:12.03 was just ahead of teammates Maddie Tetreault (2:12.60) and Sarah Koenig (2:13.56).

Standouts from the Pool

  • Sophomore Julianna Tyler had three victories on the day. She teamed with Erin Ternan, Hannah Benavides and Abby Zadorozny to open the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay.
  • Tyler also won the 200 and 100 butterfly races.
  • Junior Rylee Kelly won a pair of events, taking both the 200 and 500 freestyle races. In the 200, she and Emma Raser gave Rhode Island a 1-2 finish, with Kelly winning in 1:54.72 and Raser finishing in 1:56.26.
  • Senior Hannah Benavides was victorious in the 200 breaststroke. Her time of 2:26.03 edged freshman Gracie Maughan (2:27.74).
  • Maughan had a strong debut, winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.11.
  • Olivia Winslow won the 3-meter dive with a score of 280.58, while Lily Hsu was second with her score of 260.03.

What’s Next
Rhode Island visits Northeastern for a head-to-head meet on Saturday, Oct. 19. The meet begins at 1 p.m.

Siena Swimming & Diving competed in its second meet of the season on Saturday, resulting in a 181-114 loss to Rhode Island from Kingston, RI.

Gabrielle Rentosa took home the 100 back as she was the lone participant to clock under one minute (59.93). The freshman was a mere .47 seconds away from entering a top-10 program time.

Hope Ivanovich and Natalie Blume finished one-two in the 1000 free – Ivanovich doing so in 10:56.16, and Blume in 10:57.51. Ivanovich went on to place second in the 100 fly as well (59.80).

Shaylea Triller and Mea Amedio took the top-two spots in the 100 free – Triller winning the event in 54.57, and Amedio following right behind in 54.89. Amedio would come through with a podium finish, however, winning the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.04. Carsyn IdeAlice Scalmani, and Emme Starzman rounded out a top-four Siena showing in the event.

The 400 free relay team of Kylie CarterGayLynn Kirn, Blume, and Triller won with a time of 3:37.19.

Siena also had a second place finish in the 200 medley relay as the team of Olivia MartinKaci Owens, Rentosa, and Ide clocked in at 58.71. Leslie Dame had a second place finish in the 100 back (1:08.21), as did Kirn in the 500 free (5:18.33).

Divers Sydney Murray and Claire Donlon competed in the 1m & 3m events; Donlon finishing as the top Saint in the 1m (215.48), and Murray in the 3m (212.78).

The Saints travel on Oct. 18 for a neutral site meet against Canisius and the University of Rochester. Meet time from Erie Community College is set for 11 a.m.
