- SCM (25m)
- Meet Central
The 2022 FINA Short Course World Championships begin on December 13th and now we know the Korean squad that will be headed to Melbourne.
An 8-strong lineup comprised of 4 men and 4 women will represent Korea, with the likes of Hwang Sunwoo, Kim Woomin and Kim Seoyeong gunning for hardware over the course of the 6-day affair.
At the Korean National Sports Festival this past October, 19-year-old Hwang put up a big-time 1:44.67 in the men’s 200m freestyle. That leads the world in long course times for this season, with the teen representing the only swimmer to have delved under the 1:45 second barrier.
Hwang also punched a strong showing of 47.78 to take the 100m freestyle at that domestic competition, a time which fell just .22 outside of his own lifetime best and Asian record of 47.56 logged at the 2020 Olympic Games.
Hwang enters Melbourne as the reigning world champion in the 200m free, having clocked a time of 1:41.60 at the 2021 FINA Short Course World Championships in Abu Dhabi. That narrowly defeated runner-up Aleksandr Shchegolev of the Russian Swimming Federation (1:41.63) and Lithuania’s Danas Rapsys (1:41.73).
Hwang’s 200m free gold represented the only medal Korea earned in Abu Dhabi.
This year, Hwang is expected to race his bread-and-butter 2free, but also the 100m free and the 100m IM.
Joining him on the men’s roster are Kim, Lee Hojoon and Yang Jaehoon.
The women’s side is headed up by Olympian Kim Seoyeong. Seoyeong is set to contest the 100m fly and 200m IM, the latter of which she owns the Korean national record (SCM) with her time of 2:06.12 from 2017.
