The Scottish Gas National Short Course Championships took place at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh this past weekend, December 12th-14th.
Day 2 Finals Recap and Day 2 Highlights Race Videos:
In the Men’s 1500m Freestyle, Stephen Milne of Perth City finished first in a time of 14:44.10, ahead of Toby Robinson of Loughborough (14:51.48) and Caleb Hughes, also of Loughborough (14:57.34). Milne pulled away from the field early on, achieving a body length lead at the 200 meter mark. These three men were the only finishers under the 15 minute mark in the event. Kimberly Buys won the Women’s 50m Freestyle event in convincing fashion. Buys was the only competitor under the 25 second mark in the Women’s 50, touching in 24.97. Rachel Masson claimed second in 25.39, a few tenths ahead of the third finisher, Amelia Maughan (25.53). At the very beginning of the Men’s 100m Breaststroke, Mark Tully of Edinburgh University had the lead before being overtaken by Andrew Willis of Bath and Craig Benson of the University of Stirling. In the end, Willis edged out a win over Benson, claiming the gold in a time of 58.68. Benson took second in 58.68 followed by Michael Jamieson in 59.41. This was Jamieson’s first return to racing after taking a holiday from swimming since this summer. Elizabeth Simmonds of Bath claimed first in the Women’s 200m Backstroke, finishing over five seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Her final time was 2:03.24, which put her ahead of Natasha Hofton of the University of Stirling (2:08.35). Kathleen Dawson claimed third place in a time of 2:09.32, the last athlete in this event to break the 2:10 barrier.
Roberto Pavoni of Loughbourough claimed first in the Men’s 200m IM in a time of 1:55.86, followed by Dan Wallace in 1:56.32 and Lewis Coleman in 1:58.22. In the Women’s 100m Butterfly, Jemma Lowe of Bath took first by almost two seconds, winning in a time of 57.42. She was chased by Rachael Kelly (59.22) and Raquel Matos (59.50). In the Men’s 50m Backstroke final, Chris Walker-Hebborn won in a time of 23.94, the only time under 24 seconds. Ryan Bennett and Craig McNally battled it out for second, with Bennett touching after Walker-Hebborn for the silver in 24.23. McNally finished in a time of 24.67. Corrie Scott of Edinburgh University broke the Scottish Record and achieved the victory in the Women’s 50m Breaststroke final, finishing in 30.71. Sophie Taylor of London Aquatics was a very close second in 30.73. Sarah Vasey (Derventio) won the bronze in 30.81. In the Men’s 200m Butterfly, Cameron Brodie took first in 1:54.68, ahead of Roberto Pavoni (1:55.90) and Matthew Johnson (1:56.28).
The Women’s 400m Freestyle was a very close race. In the end, Aimee Willmott edged out a win in 4:03.91. The silver medalist was Hannah Miley (4:04.01), and the bronze went to Keri-Anne Payne (4:04.84). Next up was the Men’s 100m Freestyle. Jasper Aerents won in a time of 47.33, touching out Emmanuel Vanluchene (47.89) and Robbie Renwick (47.96). In the Women’s 100m IM, it was once again Kimberly Buys who took first. Buys touched in 1:00.08, ahead of Raquel Matos (1:00.89). Finally, in the 200m Freestyle Relay events, Edinbugh University claimed wins in both the Men’s and the Women’s events in 1:29.52 and 1:43.64, respectively.
Some noteworthy records that were broken on Day 2 are as follows:
- Imogen Clark (Derventio) – British Junior Record in the 50m Freestyle (25.68)
- Dan Wallace – Scottish Record for 200m IM (1:56.32)
- Robbie Renwick (University of Stirling) – 100m Freestyle (47.96)
