Purdue Crushes Miami (Ohio) In Early Season Road Win

The Purdue University Boilermakers women’s swimming and diving teams, along with the men’s diving team traveled to Oxford, Ohio, where the women came away with an easy victory. The men’s swimmers remained in West Lafayette and competed in an intrasquad competition. The meet was definitely some quirky scheduling- Miami (Ohio) has a men’s swimming team, but for whatever reason they did not choose to compete in men’s swimming. The best guess could be that they will face Ohio rival Xavier in a competition tomorrow.

The Purdue women dominated from start to finish, so much so that they were already marking swimmers “exhibition” after the first diving break. They went 1-2 on the opening relay, with the most impressive split coming from senior breaststroker Emily Fogle (28.26). They took first and second in every event following that into the diving break, allowing them to coast the rest of the way to the win. Fogle again would provide the highlight of the first half, recording a 1:01.98 to win the 100 breaststroke by over two seconds. That time puts her in the top ten for Division 1 so far this season.

Also impressing for the Boilermakers was sophomore Kaersten Meitz, who won the 1000 freestyle and recorded the second fastest time in the 500. She just missed getting under the 10 minute mark, touching at 10:00.11 in the 1000. This was followed up with a 4:51.77. She would lose in the 500 to senior teammate Alexa Davis, who also recorded strong times in the 200 (1:48.39) and 500 (4:50.74).

The top performer for Miami on the day was also in breaststroke, as Stephanie Lemire won the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.18. The Purdue women are now 2-1 on the season after opening the season with a loss to Michigan and a win over Michigan State. This was Miami’s season opener, leaving them 0-1 with a dual against Xavier tomorrow.

In the Purdue men’s intrasquad, there were a couple of notable performances. Danny Tucker swam a solid 50 freestyle (20.44), although he does not appear on Purdue’s roster, having already exhausted his eligibility. Sophomore breaststroker Marat Amaltdinov would record an NCAA “B” time in the 200 breaststroke, dipping under two minutes (1:59.28).
