MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine women’s swim and dive program returned home to Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool on Friday morning, defeating PCH Cup rival Loyola Marymount 144-59 for its third win of the season.
MEET RECAP
Pepperdine started the meet strong, as the Waves went 1-2 in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Lindsay Hemming (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS), Jenna Sanchez (Highland, Calif./Redlands East Valley HS), Charli Sunahara (Chino, Calif./Ruben S. Ayala HS) and Alexandra Browne (Arlington, Va./Washington-Liberty HS) took first with a 1:48.65 time. Two events later, Lexi Haymart (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Ponderosa HS) claimed first in the 200 free with a 1:56.12 showing. In her first individual race of the season, Sanchez won the 50 free after posting a 24.95 time. To close out the Waves’ success before the break, Hemming paced the 100 IM field with a 1:02.01 time. She also won the 500 free after a 5:21.42 performance.
Pepperdine kept the pressure on in the second half of the meet, recording two straight first-place finishes out of the break. Ariana Yeh (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) won the 100 fly in 1:00.24, while Sunahara took first in the 100 free, doing it in 53.97.
To round out the meet, Maddie McLeay (Omaha, Neb./Millard North HS) swept away the 100 breast field with a 1:11.35 time. The 200 free relay squad of Sunahara, Browne, Jasmine Williams (Folsom, Calif./Folsom HS) and Eleanor Mashkovich (Calabasas, Calif./Westlake HS) took home first with a 1:39.96 performance.
In addition to winning nine of the 11 events, Pepperdine took second in seven events.
QUOTABLE
Head coach Ellie Monobe said: “We had a very strong showing today. Today was a different format than what we’re used to, a little more sprint-focused, which our team has been working on the last training cycle, so it’s exciting to see that some of the work we’re putting in is paying off. Lindsay Hemming won the 100 IM which is not her normal event. We had senior Jenna Sanchez winning the 50 free in her season debut, which was really exciting. Charli Sunahara also did some off events and that’s what’s fun about this type of meet, that we have a lot of depth and can throw some of our top athletes into off events and still have a very strong meet.
“Overall, our relays are looking sharp and we’re pretty excited to see what we can do against UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego tomorrow.”
NEXT UP
Pepperdine has a quick turnaround as the Waves face UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego in a home double dual meet on Saturday (November 5) at 11 a.m. The meet will be streamed live on the WCC Network.
