Following its City Council approval vote in April of this year, Paris, France has now formally submitted its bid to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
The letter officially given to the IOC yesterday promises to “build a project which is unforgettable, innovative, responsible and sustainable”, according to Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and French Olympic Committee President, Denis Masseglia. (AP)
France is no stranger to hosting the Games, although a potential 2024 bid would mark a century since the event was last presented in the country. Paris successfully hosted the Olympics in 1900 and 1924, but failed to be awarded the event again after having submitted bids for 1992, 2008 and 2012 Games.
Paris joins Rome, Italy, Hamburg, Germany, Budapest, Hungary and Los Angeles, California as candidates to host the 2024 Summer Games. Hamburg and Rome have officially filed their applications, while Los Angeles and Budapest are still just considered “interested bidders” at this time.
The clock is certainly ticking for Hamburg, Rome and any other city wishing to make their intentions known. All official bids are due to the International Olympic Committee in just two days, by September 15, 2015. The IOC will vote on the host city during the 130th International Olympic Committee session in Lima, Peru in the summer of 2017.
