While all eyes were on world record holder Adam Peaty in this morning’s heats of the men’s 100m breaststroke at the British Olympic Trials, a pair of teenagers made some noise en route to booking their place in tonight’s final.
29-year-old Peaty indeed took the top spot, firing off a time of 58.53 as his quickest effort in 12 months. Greg Butler was next in line at 1:00.29 while James Wilby nabbed the 3rd seed in 1:00.38.
Further down, however, were 16-year-olds Filip Nowacki and Max Morgan, hitting big-time personal bests to earn another swim.
Nowacki of Tigers Jersey stopped the clock in a time of 1:01.46 to rank 5th this morning. That obliterated his previous personal best of 1:03.16 earned at last year’s Commonwealth Games when he took silver in the event.
Splitting 28.90/32.56, Nowacki’s performance established a new British Age Record for 16-year-olds. His 1:01.46 outing overtook the previous record of 1:01.98 Elliot Woodburn put on the books in 2022.
As for Morgan, the Reed Swimming Club athlete punched a mark of 1:01.64 (28.62/33.02) to claim the 7th seed. His result also hacked significant time off his previous personal best. That prior PB sat at 1:02.25.
For additional perspective, Nowacki’s 1:01.46 and Morgan’s 1:01.64 would rank the teens 5th and 6th, respectively, among the fastest-ever American 15-16-year-olds.
Although Nowacki and Morgan will have their work cut out for them to make the Aquatics GB (formerly British Swimming)-mandated qualification time of 59.45 needed for Paris, their results here are encouraging for the next generation of British breaststroking talent bubbling beneath the surface.
Hopefully the start of a golden generation of GB breaststrokers inspired by peaty
Neither lad turns 17 for quite some time (Jan 2025 for Morgan, and late 2024 for Nowacki I believe), so we may see them push that record a fair bit faster over the course of the year.

In the same final, peaty got bronze..can t you remember..Adam is back and that is soo cool..but trails and international stages are two different factors
I don’t think he was rested at Doha. This is the first time we have seen a rested Adam swimming LC since Tokyo
Adam puts in dry land & weight’s & resistant bands.
Of course I remember that. He was on his path back to form then.
