STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific women’s swimming team (1-0) put a check in the win column for its first meet of the season at home.

The Tigers beat the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay 167-95 at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool on Saturday morning.

“I couldn’t be more proud of these ladies. I think that this year, coming in, they knew how they wanted to start this season, and they set the tone with this meet today; that was exciting to see,” said Head Coach Katelyne Herrington. “We’ve been focusing on seizing the race opportunities, and I think we saw that today in several events when we swept one, two, three. That was both in the 200 free and the 500 free; those were huge upsets for us compared to where we were last year at this time. We also took one, two, three in the 100 and 200 back; that was awesome. We took one, two and three in the 200 fly. Those were huge standout races for our ladies, and I couldn’t be more happy and proud to see them have those incredible races.”

The Tiger team of sophomore Jordyn Gonzales, sophomore Paige Sondgeroth, sophomore Noemi Melendez and sophomore Alexia Ferguson took first in the 200-yard medley relay to start the meet.

Freshman Diana Chan captured a big first-place finish for the Tigers in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:53.51.

Pacific swept first, second and third in the 200-yard freestyle. Sophomore Ellie Macphail took first place, sophomore Jadyn Phillips took second, and sophomore Kelly Kermoian took third.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Pacific took the first four place finishes. Gonzales finished first, freshman Annelise Thomas finished second, Chan finished third, and freshman Dianna Brazil finished fourth.

Sondgeroth took first place for the tigers in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.31.

The 200-yard butterfly saw another sweep by the Tigers for the first three finishes. Melendez took first, junior Taylor Moultrie took second, and sophomore Emma Hooper took third.

Kermoian took first in the 200-yard backstroke, followed by Gonzales with a second-place finish and senior Jessica Clark with the third-place finish for another Pacific sweep.

Sondgeroth had another first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.48.

Pacific swept the 500-yard freestyle event for the first three finishes. Macphail took first, Chan took second, and Phillips took third.

Melendez took first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.29. Moultrie was not far behind with a second-place time of 59.68.

The Tigers took first place in 10 of the meet’s 14 events.

Pacific’s men’s and women’s teams are in action next weekend for the Pacific Invite, Oct. 1 and 2, at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool. Both days will start at 10 a.m. Admission is free to attend swim meets at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool. The Tigers will host Simon Fraser and the University of Nevada, Reno.

STOCKTON, Calif. – The 2022-23 season opened for the Cal State East Bay women’s swimming team on Saturday in a dual meet at Pacific. Although the Pioneers lost to the Tigers, 167-95, some very exceptional individual performances in the pool were on display.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

  • Brooklyn Dressel placed first in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 23.48 seconds, which was the fastest NCAA Division II time thus far for the season and a lifetime best for her.
  • Dressel also placed first in the 100 yard freestyle, with a time of 51.97.
  • Even with Dressel’s outstanding time on the 50 yard freestyle, Delaney Carlson also finished fast with a time of 24.11.
  • Kylie Beaudet, in her first collegiate meet, placed first in the 200 yard individual medley, finishing in 2:11.95.
  • The 400 yard freestyle relay team of Dressel, Jacqueline FeurtadoOlivia Parham and Carlson finished first in a time of 3:35.22.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH SHANE PLETON

“Overall I was very pleased with our effort and execution today. This meet being so early in the season is an opportunity to gauge where we are at and focus on a lot of the details without a huge amount of expectations.”

“Brooklyn was a huge standout today. I really couldn’t believe her time in the 50 free. For the first time in my coaching career, I actually had to question whether or not there was a malfunction with the timing system. She looked phenomenal, but putting up that kind of time this early in the season is incredible.”

“The funny thing about that race is Brooklyn’s time caught me so off guard, it took away from a huge swim from Delaney. 24.11 was by far Delaney’s best dual meet swim and definitely something we can build off.”
