Ohio Women Take Down Ball State 194-102

The Ohio women’s team took down Ball State with a convincing 194-102 win this past weekend while celebrating senior day. Full results can be found here. Read on for full recaps from each team.

Ohio:

ATHENS, Ohio – Ohio swimming and diving ended the home part of the regular season with a 192-102 win at home on Saturday, Jan. 30 when the Bobcats hosted Mid-American Conference foe Ball State at the Ohio University Aquatic Center. The meet served as Ohio’s senior day where seniors  Haleigh Bartlett (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), Haley Clark (College Station, Texas), Addison Ferguson (Westfield Center, Ohio), Stephanie Gyurke (Bellevue, Ohio), Bianca Hauzer (Bedfordview, South Africa), Ariel Hodges (Warren, Mich.) and Kelse Johnson (Centennial, Colo.) were honored prior to the event. The ceremony concluded with a special performance of the National Anthem by sophomore Elena Patz (Waunakee, Wis.).

“I’m very proud of our seniors today and overall just the entire team’s performance,” head coach Rachel Komisarz-Baugh said. “I enjoyed watching the seniors step up, they raced like seniors today and I think they showed great leadership and what it means to be a Bobcat and to be a part of this team.

The first meet of the day was the 400 medley relay where the Ohio ‘B’ team of Caroline Raley (Mobile, AL), Hodges, Carrie Dukes (Monkton, Md.) and Clark came in first at 3:55.26. The ‘C’ team of Kimberly Zehnder, Johnson, Patz and Katie Lemen (Carmel, Ind) came in third with a time of 4:00.88. The ‘A’ team of Ferguson, Mackenzie Hornstra (Naperville, Ill.), Laura Dawson (Newcastle Upon Tyne, Eng.) and Corrin Van Lanen (Green Bay, Wis.) was disqualified.

Up next was the 1000-yard freestyle where Ana Henderson (Danville, Calif.) came out on top with a final time of 10:23.28. Hauzer followed in second with a time of 10:32.51.

Next was the 200-yard freestyle where the Bobcats claimed a podium sweep. Josephine Barker (Richmond, N.Yorkshire (Eng.) claimed first in 1:54.89, Zehnder took second in 1:55.47 and Katie Lemen took third in 1:56.85.

The 100-yard backstroke followed, where Ohio took another podium sweep. Ferguson took first in 57.60, Raley took second in 57.74 and Myriah Ariza-Balter (Evergreen, Colo) closed out in 59.08.

Next was the 100-yard breaststroke. Gyurke took second in 1:06.11, Hornstra took third in 1:06.46, Johnson took fourth in 1:08.70 and Hodges took fifth, touching in at 1:08.73.

Ohio claimed another podium sweep plus one in the 200-yard butterfly. Dawson touched in first at 2:04.06. Patz followed in second in 2:04.65 while Madeline Wyke (Columbus, Ind.) (2:08.07) and Emily Davis (Lexington, Ky.) (2:08.92) took third and fourth respectively.

Event number seven was the 50-yard freestyle where Van Lanen continued her strong freshman season, taking first in 23.64. Clark followed in second, touching in at 24.44 and Dukes took sixth, touching in at 25.66.

Next was the 1-meter diving where Bartlett took first with a score of 272.02. Olivia Dillon took third with a score of 241.35.

Event nine was the 100-yard freestyle. Another podium sweep for Ohio, Clark took first in 53.27, Barker took second in 53.74 and Lemen took third in 54.35. Lexie White also swam, taking fifth in 55.28.

Next was the 200-yard backstroke where the Bobcats took another podium sweep on the day. Dawson claimed first, touching in at 2:06.36, Ariza-Balter took second in 2:06.69 and Zehnder took third in 2:08.15. Raley swam, following in fourth and touching in at 2:08.36.

Next was the 200-yard breaststroke. Gyurke touched in first in 2:22.09. Hornstra (2:23.70), Johnson (2:27.54) and Hodges (2:33.01) also swam but did not place.

In the 500-yard freestyle Ohio once again claimed first thanks to Hauzer touching in at 5:08.48. Henderson (5:09.32) , Barker (5:15.70) and Lemen (5:22.01) also swam but did not place.

In the 100-yard butterfly Van Lanen took first for Ohio, touching in at 55.94. Wyke took third in 58.51, Davis took fourth in 59.10 and Raley took seventh in 1:03.13.

Dawson (56.51), Dukes (57.78), Patz (58.31) and Ferguson (58.96) also swam but did not place.

Event 14 was the 3-meter diving where Bartlett claimed first with a score of 318.90 and Dillon took sixth with a score of 214.21.

Next was the 200-yard IM where Gyurke took first in 2:08.47. Johnson (2:11.27), Ariza-Balter (2:13.21), Patz (2:15.44) and Hodges (2:20.90) also swam but did not place.

The last event of the night was the 200-yard freestyle relay. The ‘B’ team of Zehnder, Dukes, White and Barker took second, finishing in 1:38.88. The ‘A’ team of Clark, Ferguson, Hornstra, and Van Lanen followed in third, touching in at 1:39.25. The ‘C’ team of Hauzer, Davis, Wyke and Henderson took fourth, touching in at 1:41.63.

Up next, the Bobcats will travel to Huntington, W.Va. to battle with Marshall on Friday, Feb. 5. to compete in the Marshall Invite.

Ball State:

ATHENS, Ohio – The Ball State women’s swimming and diving team completed the final dual meet of the season when it took on Mid-American Conference opponent Ohio Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats topped the Cardinals 194-102 in the Ohio University Aquatics Center.

Sophomore Amanda Kedzierski was the lone Cardinal to earn an individual event win over the Bobcats, as well as partake in the only relay event win of the day for Ball State. Kedzierski clocked a 1:05.53 time in the 100 breaststroke and combined with Liz Madison, Lauren Elstonand Jessica Extine for a 1:38.68 final in the 200 freestyle relay to round out the meet. The squad also earned a second place finish in the 400 medley relay with a 3:58.49 time.

In the 200 breast, senior Sydney Harris marked the highest finish for Ball State with a 2:29.66 time for second, while Madison followed with a 2:33.23 time for a third place finish. The event was followed by the 500 free in which sophomore Traci Muszalski earned a second place finish with a 5:17.22 final, while she was followed by sophomore Morgan Brebbermanwho touched the wall in 5:21.35.

Junior Katie Horn added to the Ball State second place finishes when she marked a 58.32 time in the 100 butterfly, while junior Kimberly Scott did the same in the 200 IM with a 2:12.81 time.

In the diving well, senior Madie Zirzow finished second overall in one-meter diving action with a score of 259.27. Zirzow also clinched another second place finish in three-meter action when she turned in a 253.05 score.

Three-meter diving action also showcased Quinn Bixler earning a score of 229.50, Taylor Fiew with a 221.70 score and Brittany Penn earning a 221.55 mark. The trio earned scores of 238.50, 238.12 and 220.42, respectively, in the earlier one-meter competition.

Although today’s meet with Ohio rounded out regular season action for the Ball State women’s swimming and diving team as a whole, select members from the team will participate in the Ohio State Winter Invitational Feb. 13-14 prior to the 2016 Women’s Swimming and Diving MAC Championships Feb. 24-27.
