Oakland Takes 170-118 Win Over Toledo

Oakland swam to victory over Toledo on Saturday with a final score of 170-118. Patricia Aschan won her triple to help the team beat Toledo, inclusing the 200 fly (2:06.57), 200 back (2:04.72), and 400 IM (4:28.30). Full results can be found here.

Oakland:

ROCHESTER, Mich.—Oakland’s Patricia Aschan earned three individual event wins, while Nikki Flynn and Holly Morren each won an individual event and were a part of both winning relays as the Oakland women’s swimming and diving team defeated Toledo 170-118 Saturday afternoon at the UT Student Recreation Center. The win over the Rockets was the first for the Golden Grizzlies since 2004.

Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be back in action for a two-day quad meet Jan. 15-16 against Cincinnati, Kenyon College and Olivet Nazarene in Gambier, Ohio at the Kenyon Aquatic Center.

Toledo:

TOLEDO, OH – The Toledo women’s swimming and diving team fell 170-118 to Oakland University on Saturday afternoon at UT’s Student Rec Center.

Seniors Lauren Comer and Samantha Richart scored the only Rocket victories of the meet. Comer scored in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:05.75 and Richart placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.64.

Toledo finished in second in six races, three of which were within .03 seconds of Oakland’s first-place finishes. In the 200-yard breaststroke, sophomore Jessica Avery touched at 2:21.32, just .01 second behind Oakland’s Rachel Waite’s victory time.

Junior Rachael Hester swam a hard battle against Oakland’s Krissy Harmon in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Harmon touched first with a time of 10:28.58, while Hester finished right after with a 10:28.60.

Sophomore Katrin Streicher battled Patricia Ashcan in the 200-yard butterfly. Streicher was unable to finish with a victory and posted a second place time of 2:06.60, just .03 seconds behind Ashcan’s first-place finish.

Streicher also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.12.

Toledo took second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.85) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:32.84).

“I thought our girls set their races up well,” head coach Chris Peters said. “We just need to work on finishing. Hopefully some of those close finishes stung a little bit and we can learn from them going forward.”

The Rockets travel to Muncie, IN next weekend for a dual meet against Ball State. The meet is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23.

UT returns home on Saturday, Jan. 30 to host Buffalo at 1:00 p.m. in the Student Rec Center. Toledo’s five seniors will be honored before the meet begins.
