BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Northeastern swimming and diving team finished in first place in 10 of 16 events en route to a 171.5-128.5 victory over the University of Vermont in the season opener.
The Huskies started off hot, claiming a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, the first event of the day, as Sidney Smith, Klara Juliusson, Kelly Cheng and Megan Clark finished with a time of 1:49.59.
All four members of the relay also claimed individual wins as well. Clark got the win in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.73, Sidney Smith won the 50-yard backstroke (28.03), Juliusson claimed a win in the 50-yard breaststroke (30.81) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.17) and Cheng placed first in the 100 yard butterfly (58.76).
Lena Spear had two wins on the day, one in the 50-yard freestyle (24.72) and another in the 100-yard freestyle (53.43). Joanna Wojciehowska grabbed a win in the 500-yard freestyle for the Huskies with a time of 5:18.47. Matilda Weiler was the last swimmer to claim a win in the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:01.15.
Elly Morrison had a great day for the divers, placing second in the 1-meter (227.39) and second in the 3-meter (219.90). Sabrina Chan finished in third place in the 1-meter dive (201.37) while Lauren O’Sullivan took third in the 3-meter (198.07).
All four of the Huskies new members for 2019-20 – Marybeth Johnson, Bailey Klafehn, Annike Ruehlicke and Lauren O’Sullivan – made their debuts against the Catamounts.

The Huskies will return home to compete in the annual Red vs. Black Intrasquad Meet (exh.) on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 9 a.m.

BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of Vermont captain Emily Murphy won both the one-meter and three-meter boards in a 171.5-128.5 loss against Northeastern to open the 2019-20 season Saturday morning at Forbush Natatorium.
UVM swimmers won four more events in the meet to claim six podiums.

“I am really proud of our ladies today and how they competed,” head coach Gerry Cournoyer said. “Highlights included Emily Murphy winning both boards, her diving skills have really grown in the last three years. We also had a nice surprise with freshman Maria Kelly winning the 1,000 free. I am looking forward to a great next month of training; the athletes have a lot of hard work ahead and today was a great first step.”
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Murphy posted a score of 227.69 in the one-meter dive to narrowly edge Northeastern’s Elly Morrison (227.39). Murphy followed her one-meter performance with a score of 227.84 on the three-meter board, edging Morrison (219.90) again.
- Kelly clocked a time of 11:00.35 in the 1,000 free and took a come-from-behind victory over Northeastern’s Emma Metzger (11:01.11). Senior captain Sophia Smith claimed third in the 1,000 free (11:01.41) in her first race of the day. She went on to finish second in the 500 free (5:22.55).
- Senior Morgan Montgomery won the 100 back (59.75) and finished third in the 50 back (28.50). Sophomore Kendall Ware finished second in the 50 back (28.41) and third in the 100 back (1:01.56).
- Junior Vivian Nguyen tied Northeastern’s Lena Spear for first in the first heat of the 50 fly with a time of 26.86. Sierra Sexton finished just behind in third with a time of 26.98. Vermont freshman Jenny O’Neil won the event with a time of 26.71 in the second heat.
- O’Neil combined with Nguyen to finish second and third in the 100 fly with respective times of 58.98 and 59.39. O’Neil (1:02.90) and Cailin Campbell (1:03.27) finished second and third in the 100 IM.
- The Vermont 200 free relay team closed the meet with a victory. Mina Poppas, Kira Parker, Smith, and Sexton combined to post a time of 1:42.44 for the gold.
UP NEXT
Vermont returns to competition in a month, when the Catamounts make a trip to Amherst to take on UMass. That meet is slated to begin at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19.
