Although at the varsity level, Corona del Mar beat the Newport Harbor boys team, with the combined scores from open, jr. varsity and varsity, Newport Harbor won on both the boys and girls side. The high school girls and boys meet was hosted by Corona del Mar in Newport Beach, CA.
Starting the girls of Newport Harbor off well, they won the 200 Medley with a time of 1:57.06, followed by Corona del Mar in a time of 2:00.27. Newport Harbor girls continued to go on and win six of the ten events.
The Newport Harbor freshman star sisters Zoe Spitz and Ayla Spitz continued to shine at this meet as they each won every event they swam. The Sailors 200 freestyler, Zoe, won the event with a time of 1:56.21. She would later go on to win the 100 fly in a time of 59.16. Sister Ayla Spitz, won the 100 free (51.27) and 100 back (58.29).
They were both members on the winning 400 free relay that won in a time of 3:40.00 with along with sophomore Jessica Lynch and freshman Linnea Kelly with Ayla anchoring in a time of 51.71. In addition, they both were on the winning 200 free relay in a time of 1:39.50, along with freshman Kili Skibby and sophomore Kayla Whelan. Skibby also brought a win to the Sailors in the 200 IM in a time of 2:19.85.
For Corona del Mar, juniors Nicole Lin and Jaleh Moaddeii took away the individual victories. Lin winning the 50 free in a time of 25.13 and the 100 breast in 1:09.18 and Moaddeii winning the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:19.55.
On the boys side, Corona del Mar varsity boys team won the majority of events, but lost in the boys combined scores. They started the meet off with winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:39.57. The Newport Harbor boys B relay was disqualified.
The Sea King junior, Ethan Archer won the 100 fly (52.23) and 100 back (53.12). In both those events Archer was followed in placing by teammates seniors Jon Polos (54.13) and sophomore Henry Wilde (56.59) respectively. Polos also placed second in the 50 free going 22.55, while senior teammate Tanner Roletter won in a time of 22.42.
For the Sailors, senior Sawyer Farmer won the 200 IM and the 100 free in times of 2:03.87 and 47.99 respectively. Newport Harbor also was able to place one-two in the 500 free by Daniel Rafferty (5:00.01) and Cole Brosnan (5:01.31). In the final event, The Sailors 400 free A relay won in a time of 3:14.13.
After the open, jr. varsity and varsity scores were tallied, Newport Harbor took home the win from both girls and boys team.
Both the Corona del Mar Sea Kings and the Newport Harbor Sailors will compete at the CIF-Southern Sectional swim meet May 11-14, 2016.
