ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Led by three wins from swimmer Michael Phillips and two from diver Finn Gelbach, the Navy men’s swimming and diving team (1-1) won all 16 events during a 199-88 victory over UMBC (2-1), Friday evening in Baltimore.
Navy won the 2023 Patriot League Championship and UMBC won last year’s America East Conference title.
“It was great to return to competition after our first meet of the year two weeks ago at Penn State,” said Navy head coach Bill Roberts. “I was really happy with the way the team raced today. Several of the things we have emphasized since our opener were improved upon in our meet today. We still have a ways to go.”
Phillips placed first in the 100 breast (56.85), 200 breast (2:03.66) and 200 IM (1:52.54). He was the lone swimmer to win multiple individual events against the Retrievers. Meanwhile, Gelbach swept the two diving boards (scores were not available).
Additional winners in the first half of the meet were Joshua Wurgler, 1000 free (9:43.95); Cohen Bruner, 200 free (1:42.47); Ben Irwin, 100 back (50.39); Evan O’Dea, 200 fly (1:53.32); and Ben Denman-Grimm, 50 free (21.28).
The second half of the meet saw Austin Lockhart win the 100 free (46.48), Zach Stump place first in the 200 back (1:53.58), Luca Oliva win the 500 free (4:37.58) and Jonah Harm record a first-place finish in the 100 breast (48.55).
Navy also won both the 200 medley and 400 free relays.
The Mids will have little time to rest as they, along with the Navy women’s team, will play host to George Washington Saturday at 10 a.m. in Lejeune Hall.

BALTIMORE – The UMBC men’s swimming and diving team competed against the always-tough squad from the United States Naval Academy on Friday afternoon at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.
The meet started in exciting fashion as the Retrievers’ 200 yard medley relay squad of Dani Nicusan, Christian Coleman, Oliver Gassmann and Bode Neale gave the Midshipmen a tough battle, but were edged by 0.55 seconds for first place. UMBC posted a time of 1:32.85.
Senior Bode Neale and freshman Andy Vines earned silvers for the Retrievers. Neale posted a mark of 21.47 to finish second in the 50 freestyle, while Vines amassed 280.25 points and placed second in the 1-meter diving competition.
Vines came in fourth on the 3-meter board, but also topped the 280-point mark, recording 287.35 points, good for fourth place.
Nicusan placed third in the 100 breaststroke and the 100 freestyle to amass six points for the Retrievers.
UMBC will compete against local rivals Towson, Johns Hopkins and host Loyola-Maryland at the Greyhounds’ Invitational Meet on Oct. 27-29.
