NAG Relay Record-holder Liza Whitmire to Swim for Princeton in 2020-21

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Liza Whitmire, a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American from Charlotte, North Carolina, is headed to Princeton, New Jersey in the fall to swim for the 2020 Ivy champions.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to the admissions process at Princeton University to swim and study as part of the Class of 2024! Huge thanks to my amazing family, friends, teammates, and coaches who have done nothing but support and encourage me. I couldn’t be more excited to join the Tiger family!”

Whitmire is a senior at Myers Park High School and she swims year-round for Aquatic Team Of Mecklenburg. She swam IM and butterfly at the 2020 North Carolina High School Class 4A Championships in February, placing 4th and 5th, respectively. As a junior she was runner-up in the IM and came in 5th in the 100 breast. In club swimming, the versatile Whitmire won the 100 back and 200 IM and was runner-up in the 200 fly at the 2020 North Carolina LSC Senior Short Course State Championships. She notched PBs in both the 100 fly and 200 fly at the meet. Last December she finaled in both the 200 IM (11th) and 400 IM (13th) at Winter Juniors East.

In January, Whitmire was a member of two ATOM relays that broke 17-18 NAG records at the team’s Frosty Invite. She swam fly on the 400y mixed medley relay (with Garrett Boone, Jack Meehan, and Lindsay Flynn) that took five seconds off the previous mark. She also anchored the 400y mixed free relay, swimming with the same three teammates.

A 2020 Olympic Trials qualifier in the 200m IM (2:16.49), Whitmire has national standards in the 50 free, 100/200 back, 100/200 breast, 100 fly, and 200/400 IM. Her top SCY times include:

  • 100 breast – 1:01.86
  • 200 breast – 2:14.47
  • 200 IM – 2:00.10
  • 400 IM – 4:17.52
  • 100 back – 54.96
  • 200 back – 1:57.63
  • 100 fly – 54.01
  • 200 fly – 2:02.76
  • 50 free – 23.47
  • 100 free – 51.20

Second-season coach Bret Lundgaard will have many options for Whitmire when she suits up for the Tigers next fall. Her best times would have scored at 2020 Ivy League Women’s Championships in the A finals of the 100 breast, 200 breast, 200 IM, 400 IM, 100 back, and 200 back.
