WASHINGTON, D.C. — Madalyn Myers and Ben Cono each won two events for Loyola University Maryland as the Greyhounds wrapped up the second of two days of competition against American University to open the 2015-2016 season.
Myers opened the day with a 400-yard individual medley victory, touching the wall in 4:38.76, more than six seconds ahead of the race’s second-place finisher.
She came back in the evening session to win the 200-yard butterfly by a much closer margin. Myers out-touched American’s Tori Haviland by two-hundredths of a second, finishing in 2:11.81 to Haviland’s 2:11.83. Myers’ teammates finished third in both of her wins Saturday; Cara Egan swan 4:45.17 to finish third in the 400 IM, while Kaitlin Richter claimed that spot in the butterfly in 2:14.23.
Cono was victorious in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes after winning a pair of races Friday night. He led a quartet of Greyhounds who finished first through fourth in the 100-yard version, winning in 56.62. John Callaghan was second in 1:00.13, followed by North Woods (1:01.17) and Chris Cary (1:01.90).
The top three in the shorter race – Cono (2:05.80), Callaghan (2:11.43) and Woods (2:17.18) – took the top three spots in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Six other Loyola swimmers posted victories on Saturday with Andrew Mann claiming the first. He earned top honors in the 400-yard individual medley in 4:17.91.
Jack Bair led a one-two-three sweep in the men’s 200-yard freestyle for the Greyhounds, posting a leading time of 1:47.02; he was followed by Woods (1:48.03) and Madison Hardimon (1:48.37).
Courtney Kenyon and Cara Egan finished first and second, respectively, in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.78 and 1:09.50.
Rich Mueller was first in the men’s 100-yard freestyle (48.22) after finishing the 100-yard butterfly in 53.33, leading Loyola swimmers who finished third through ninth. The Greyhounds also finished third through seventh in the 100-yard freestyle, led by Hardmion’s 49.01.
Cara Egan led a one-two-three Loyola finish in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke, winning in 2:29.28. Theresa McKallen placed second in 2:29.43, and Courtney Kenyon was third in 2:31.30.
Aly Pacitti had top-three finishes in two races, taking second in the women’s 200-yard freestyle (1:58.51) and third in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:30.12). Alden Bauman was second in the longest race of the weekend, swimming a time of 18:24.59 to place one spot above Pacitti.
Zeke Wolfgang and Alec Sperandio took second and third in both the 100- and 200-yard backstrokes. Wolfgang clocked times of 53.78 and 1:57.49, and Sperandio came in at 54.36 and 1:57.69.
Mann and Stephen Tonaszuck finished second and third in the 1,650-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 17:10.22 and 17:19.94, respectively.
Chris Cary and Jenna Egan each had third-place finishes for Loyola. Cary swam 2:00.77 in the men’s 200-yard butterfly, and Egan clocked 2:12.73 in the women’s 200-yard backstroke.
