SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State swimming and diving squads split with cross-town foe Drury on the road here Friday night. The women’s team defeated the Panthers, 163-68, while the men’s club fell to Drury, 145-98.

“I thought we started out really well,” head coach Dave Collins said. “We have good energy on the relays. We won both the medleys, and that was a goal coming in was to win a relay,” “We had really good 1000s, good 200-freestyles, and then I felt like we kind of lost a little energy after that.”

“I did feel like we had a lot of breakout swims on some swimmers as we go into the conference meet that will really help us,” Collins added. “All in all, it was a really positive night.”

The women’s team recorded a first-place finisher in 12 out-of-the 13 events. The women’s quartet of Kelly SegoYuliya ZubinaSamantha Roemer and Ulyana Zubina began the meet with a bang, breaking a Breech Pool record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:40.12.

Vera Margula followed up the relay with a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:08.56), her last of the season due to the Missouri Valley Conference Championships not holding the event (only the 1650-yard freestyle is held). This time also marked the fastest of the season for any Bears in the event.

“It was special for me because it was the last race,” Margula said. “It just felt special because my teammates were cheering me on, and I’m happy with it. It was a good time as well.”

Next, Anna Lucas secured first place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.38) and Ulyana Zubina took first in the 50-yard freestyle (23.21), tying her all-time personal best time.

Roemer secured her first-of-two victories on the evening in the 200-yard individual medley, winning the event with a time of 2:02.44. Then, she grabbed first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.48.

“It was an exciting way to wrap up our dual-meet season, and I think we have really been able to train harder than we ever had before this year,” Roemer said. “We’re all really looking forward to being in the conference atmosphere and just seeing what we can do with what we have.”

In the 100-yard freestyle, Jordan Wenner nabbed first with a time of 51.03. Lily DeSpain earned first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.10), the best mark of any Bear in this event this season.

“I can’t take much credit for my 500 win,” DeSpain said. “That was really due to the infectious energy that our team brought to the dual today. I was really excited for the positive culture we have created over this season, and I think it has helped us train harder and better over winter break. I am so excited to see what we all accomplish at our Conference meet.”

In the last individual event for the MSU women, Yuliya Zubina snagged first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.35.

To put an exclamation point on the evening, the team of Lucas, Ainsley Jenkins, Wenner and Mai Ortega Bonilla earned first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.02.

In diving, Courtney Stanbury broke her personal best score in one-meter diving action (248.03), taking first. She also won the three-meter diving event with a score of 205.50.

On the men’s side, MSU recorded three victories on the night. Dylan Moffatt led the way for the Bears, breaking a Breech Pool record in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:10.53. The record was previously held by former MSU swimmer Antonio Thomas. Moffatt’s time also marked a season-best in the 1000 free by any Bears swimmer.

“Winning the 1000 free and breaking the pool record was good, and it showed us that our big training block over the winter break was beneficial,” Moffatt said. “It just boosts my confidence heading into our last dual meet and then into the conference season.”

Elsewhere, Pawel Krawczyk earned first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:37.58, while the relay team of Robert HillNicholas Schuster, Krawczyk and Lucas Chadwell snagged first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:29.75.

“I’m positively surprised with my times and my performances,” Krawczyk said. “There are still things I can work on during the last few weeks of my career, but I’m hyped for the rest of the season.”

The MoState men’s team returns to the pool in Fort Worth, Texas, on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 10 a.m. for a dual against TCU. The men will then travel to Oxford, Ohio for the Mid-American Conference Championships on March 1-4. The women’s team’s next meet is the MVC Championships in Iowa City, Iowa on Feb. 15-18.
