Missouri State Sweeps First Leg of Annual “Dual In The Pool” Over Drury

SPRINGFIELD – Missouri State defeated Drury in both men’s and women’s competitions here Friday in the first leg of the annual “Dual in the Pool” matchup between the cross-town rivals. The MSU men defeated the Panthers, 124-117, while the women dispatched Drury, 123-114.

The Bears started their day with second-place finishes in the women’s and men’s 400 medley relay. Kelly SegoYuliya Zubina, Sami Roemer and Jordan Wenner clocked in at 3:50.02 while the men’s quartet of Robbie Hill, Michael HampelArthur Cury and Brunno Guerra registered a time of 3:23.69.

MSU put on a dominant performance in the men’s 1,000 freestyle as Jonathan Hill blew away the field by winning the event with a time of 9:34.69. Dylan Moffatt followed in second by registering a 9:42.17.

“It felt great to grab a win both individually and as a team today,” Jonathan Hill stated. “Overall, the team performed well and I was able to find some individual success. We all looked good and are excited for the second part of our season.”

Libby Howell kept the winning ways going in the women’s 200 freestyle clocking a 1:52.26 to take the event. She was followed by Anna Lucas (1:55.25) in third place.

Pawel Krawczyk (1:40.92) edged out teammate Brunno Suzuki (1:41.39) to win the men’s 200 freestyle.

Anna Miller continued her tear in the women’s 50 freestyle as the reigning MVC Swimmer of the Year won the event with a time of 23.02. Miller was not far off the Hammons Student Center Pool Record of 22.45, which was set by Sarah Thompson of Missouri in the prior home meet on Dec. 4.

In the women’s 200 IM, Roemer took home her second win of the season, clocking in at 2:07.46.

“It was a good time to compete close to home,” Roemer said. “We always love swimming against Drury when we are here. We have been hitting hard training this week, so it is fun to see where we are at. Overall, I was really happy with my swims and the team put up a good fight.”

Cury finished second in the men’s 200 IM with a time of 1:53.25.

Adrianna Avila swept both boards in women’s diving competition with marks of 256.57 on the 1-meter boards and 269.10 in 3-meter diving. John David Spence picked up the victory in the men’s 3-meter diving event (356.25) while placing second in 1-meter diving (302.77).

In the women’s 200 butterfly, Payton Smith garnered a runner-up finish by clocking a time of 2:06.64. Krawczyk earned another victory in the men’s 200 butterfly with a blistering 1:51.99. Following Krawczyk in second place was Tyler Lewis (1:52.89).

“Coming in we had some tough weeks of training and a tough week of finals this week,” Krawczyk reflected. “We won as a team today with some good performances across the board. Everyone was tired and sore. I am proud of our guys and how they performed.”

It was once again Miller time in the women’s 100 freestyle as the St. Louis product swam a 51.02 to garner her 13th individual win this season. Cury duplicated Miller’s performance in the men’s 100 freestyle by clocking a 46.03 to win the event.

Sego kept the winning ways as she won the women’s 200 yard backstroke by swimming a 2:05.23.

“It was better than I expected,” Sego explained. “It had been a hard couple weeks of training, but I am glad I got the results we were looking for. I am excited about my times as the season is wrapping up and we are looking towards the conference meet. I am proud of everyone’s performance today.”

Robbie Hill joined the winning party for the Bears, winning the men’s 200 backstroke in 1:50.81.

In the women’s 500 freestyle, Howell placed second with a time of 5:07.14. On the men’s side the Bears went 1-2 in the 500 freestyle with Moffatt (4:36.60) winning the event and Krawczyk (4:40.39) placing second.

Yuliya Zubina (2:28.45) placed third in the women’s 200 breaststroke and Suzuki (2:06.38) took second in the men’s 200 breaststroke.
The women finished their night with a win in the 400 freestyle relay as Wenner, Howell, Roemer and Miller clocked in at 3:29.80.

The men’s 400 freestyle relay came down to the wire with Drury (3:04.54) just edging out the MSU squad of Guerra, Robbie Hill, Reese Hodgins and Jonathan Hill (3:04.95).

The teams will meet again on Jan. 15 when they conclude the series across town with a meet at Drury.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.— Missouri State edged both of Drury’s swimming & diving teams on Friday at Hammons Student Center in Springfield. Friday’s event was the first of two duals scheduled for this season between the two programs. In the men’s competition, the Bears won by seven, 124-117, and just nine points separated the women’s teams as MSU took the event 123-114.

Men’s Highlights

  • Drury won the 400 Medley Relay by two seconds, posting a time of 3:21.01
  • The Panthers were 1-2-3 in the 50 Free – Kham Glass was first (21.02), Caleb Carlson was second (21.37), and Alex Bowen was third (21.41)
  • Andrew Rodriguez won the 200 IM (1:52.30)
  • Cole Earl took the 1-meter diving competition with 256.57 points
  • Caleb Carlson won the 200 Breast (2:05.09)
  • The Panthers capped the night with a win in the 400 Free Relay (3:04.54)

Women’s Highlights

  • Drury opened the night with a win in the 400 Medley Relay (3:49.72) and won by 0.3 seconds
  • Allison Weber cruised to a win in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:25.03
  • Freshman Aurora Duncan claimed a victory in the 200 Fly (2:05.00)
  • Bec Cross finished first in the 500 Free (5:05.68)
  • Claire Conover, a freshman from Wichita, Kan., won the 200 Breast (2:20.75)

The two teams will meet again on Jan. 15 at the Breech Pool in he Drury campus.
