Minnesota Elicits Verbal from Montana Record-Holder, Cale Berkoff

Missoula, Montana’s Cale Berkoff has made a verbal commitment to the University of Minnesota for 2017-18. Berkoff is from Missoula Aquatic Club and Hellgate High School, and, unsurprisingly given his genetic makeup, specializes in backstroke.

“I chose University of Minnesota because from the moment I got there I already felt like part of the team. I’m excited for my next four years as a Gopher.”

Berkoff won the 100 fly (52.65) and 100 back (50.72) at the 2016 MHSA State Swim Meet and was a member of two Hellgate relays that broke state high school records. He swam fly on the medley relay (23.26) and anchored the 400 free relay (47.71).

In club swimming, Berkoff had a strong junior year, earning best times in nearly all his top events in both SCY and LCM. At Federal Way Sectionals in March he was an A finalist in the 100/200 backstrokes, and top-24 in the 100 free and 200 IM. He was runner-up in the 200 back at Mt. Hood Sectionals in July, and placed fourth in the 100 back. He finished in the top 24 of the 50 free and 100 fly, as well. Berkoff’s best SCY times are:

  • 50 back – 23.90
  • 100 back – 50.12
  • 200 back – 1:49.20
  • 100 free – 46.89
  • 200 free – 1:43.07
  • 100 fly – 51.70

Berkoff will first suit up for the Golden Gophers with fellow class of 2021 verbal commits Evan Yoder and Jordan Portela.
