MILWAUKEE- The Milwaukee women’s swimming and diving team returned to the pool Saturday, welcoming IU Indianapolis to Klotsche Natatorium for its first dual meet of the season. The Panthers came away with the win by a final score of 213-84.
The MKE squad posted 11 individual victories on the day, led by a pair of event wins from both Janelle Schulz and Maddi Hayashi.
“Today was a great day for IU-Indy to come to town” said head coach Kyle Clements. “They are a very fast team, and they pushed us to be the best that we could be today. After five weeks of intrasquads and time trails, it was great to race another Horizon League team.”
The Panthers started hot, having the top two finishing teams in the 200 medley relay, getting a first-place time of 1:45.07. They then closed the meet finishing first in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.60.
Milwaukee also had an outstanding effort in the 100 backstroke, with Mara Freeman (57.73), Skylar Ruggles (58.79), and Elli Moss (59.26) placing one, two, and three to earn big points for the team. Ruggles then came back in the 200 backstroke and won it with a time of 2:05.23.
In the 100 breaststroke, Gabrielle LePine (1:02.95) touched the wall almost six seconds before the second-place finisher. Then, in the 200 breaststroke, Nadia Switalski claimed first place with a time of 2:27.21.
The winning continued in the 200 butterfly as Maddi Hayashi (2:07.08) took the top spot, with Natalie DiProspero (2:07.29) right on her heels. The pair of freshmen repeated the performance in the 100 fly, with Hayashi finishing in 57.51 and DiProspero posting a time of 58.30.
The Panthers had a great showing in the 50 freestyle where Janelle Schulz (24.13) came away on top, and Carly Plate (24.55) taking the second spot. Followed by the 100 freestyle with Schulz (52.71) again victorious, this time followed by Christiana Brooks (53.20).
Erika Thomas had the final individual win of the day for Milwaukee in the 200 individual medley, touching the wall in 2:08.47.
On the diving boards, Julie Rebek grabbed the top performance in the 3m with a score of 261.98. On the 1m dive, it was Therese Missiaen who came out on top with her score 251.33.
Clements finished saying, “Our best today is not what our best will become midseason and Horizon League. We have a long way to go and a lot of work to do, but I am looking forward to the process.”

The Panthers will compete again when they travel to Illinois for two meets. First a trip to Chicago to take on UIC on Friday Nov. 1 at 4:00 p.m. They are then back the next day, Saturday Nov. 2 at 1:00 p.m. to face off with Wheaton (Ill.).

The Panthers picked up their first win on the day when Gunnar Seversen took the top spot in the 1000 freestyle with his time of 9:40.18. He would later post a second-place finish in the 500 with a time of 4:39.55.
In the 50 freestyle, Ben Lorenz took a first-place finish of his own with a winning time of 20.98. Following that, Charlie House touched the wall in 46.53 to take the 100 freestyle.
In the 100 breaststroke, Alvin Valkki (58.18) and Andrew Jones (58.47) took the second and third spots. Jay Jensen (1:55.17) had a second-place finish as well in the 200 individual medley.
On the 3m diving board, Ben Stitgen took third with a score of 285.80.
The Panthers closed the meet on a high note, winning the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:23.62.

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – The IU Indy swim and dive team split the results on the road with the men’s team earning the victory over the Milwaukee Panthers while the women’s team fell short. Zach Drotar led the men’s team with three individual first-place finished while Emmaleigh Zietlow led the women’s team with three top times.
The men’s team defeated the Panthers with a score of 200 to 100. The Jags totaled 12 first place finishes with Drotar leading the way with three individual wins. The freshman recorded his first win in the 100 breast with a time of 57.53. Drotar also took the top spot in the 200 breast (2:05.75) and the 200 IM (1:54.77).
Grayson Tidwell and Nathan Rariden each added two individual wins. Tidwell took first in the 100 back (50.88) while Jack Gallon finished right behind him with a time of 51.90. Tidwell also eanred the top time in the 200 back with a time of 1:51.95. Ben Kimmel touched the wall after Tidwell at 1:53.90 while freshman Carson Szotek finished in third at 1:54.85. Rariden took frist in the 200 free at 1:41.77 while Isaac Wilson followed in second at 1:42.75. Sophomore Rariden then touched the wall first in the 500 free with a time of 4:37.80.
The Jags took the top three spots in the 200 fly with William Gorman touching the wall first at 1:52.29 followed by Szotek (1:55.48) and Luke Dibley (1:57.64). IU Indy also took the top four spots in the 100 fly with Hugo Arteaga winning the race at 49.24 followed by Wilson (50.47), Max Gerke (51.80) and Keiran Rahmaan (52.19).
The men’s team also earned the top time in the 200 medley relay. The relay team made of Tidwell, Drotar, Arteaga and Luca Eckert recorded a time of 1:33.05 for the top spot.
Sebastian Otero led the Jags on the boards, sweeping the competition again. The junior earned first in the 3-meter dive with a score of 414.00 while Adam Schmehl took second (327.23). Otero then won the 1-meter with a score of 384.90 followed by Blake Vander Jeugdt (325.35) and Schmehl (293.63).
The women’s team fell to the Panthers with a score of 213-84. Zietlow led the way, recorded the Jags three individual wins. The senior swept the distance events taking first in the 1000 free at 10:22.36, first in the 200 free at 1:51.94 and first in the 500 free at 5:04.14.
Other top swims for the women’s team were Addy Hirsbrunner earning second in the 200 back (2:07.24) and Morgan Frausto taking second in the 200 breast (2:28.99). Midori Adams also earned a second place finish in the 1-meter dive with a score of 241.13.
The women’s 200 free relay team of Zietlow, Luca McGee, Lillian Brandt and Tori Barnet earned second with a time of 1:38.61.
The IU Indy swim and dive teams will return to the IU Natatorium when they host in state foe Ball State on Friday, November 8.
