Luna Mertins Cracks NCAA D2 Record in the 100 Free to Win her 3rd Career Individual Title

2025 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championship

Lynn University 5th year Luna Mertins has shaved a tenth of a second off the old NCAA Division II Record in the 100 yard freestyle on Saturday. She touched in 48.07, which is about 1.6 seconds better than her swim for 4th place last year.

The old record of 48.16 was set by Queens’ Polina Lapshina at the 2019 NCAA Division II Championships.

This is Mertins’ second title and NCAA Record of the meet after swimming a 51.78 to win the 100 fly on Thursday. She previously won the 100 fly at the 2022 NCAA Championship meet and the 200 medley relay at the 2024 NCAA Championship meet, and is responsible (in whole or part) for 4 of the school’s 7 all-time titles at this meet.

Splits Comparison:

Luna Mertins Polina Lapshina Luna Mertins
New D2 Record Old D2 Record PB Prior to This Season
50 free 22.92 23.14 23.65
100 free 25.15 25.02 25.67
Total time 48.07 48.16 49.32

The German-born Mertins has made improvements in many phases of her swimming this season, but her opening speed has especially improved after she dropped the 200 back from her lineup in favor of the 50 free. She finished 3rd in the 50 free in 22.34 earlier in the meet, which knocked half-a-second off her pre-season best in that event.

Mertens also finished 2nd in the 100 back in 52.37 on Friday behind Agata Naskret’s D2 title.
