The Louisville men have helped the long-term future of their recent success thanks to a verbal commitment from Indiana sprinter Trevor Carroll.
The Cardinal have a great sprint group for next season, and with Brazilian Olympian Joao de Lucca leading the way as the country’s fastest 100 freestyler so far this season, they should place in the top 12 in the country in both the 400 and 800 free relays this year.
But that sprint group is aging. De Lucca is a junior, and Sam Hoekstra, Matt Schlytter, Michael Pryor, and Alex Burtch are all seniors this year.
Carroll, though, will begin the rebuilding of these relays in the fall of 2013. He comes in with bests of 20.92 in the 50 free, 45.19 in the 100 free, and 1:37.30 in the 200 free. It would seem as though he’ll be assured a spot on at least the 800 free relay as a freshman – that squad was 14th at NCAA’s last year, with two swimmers splitting 1:37 or slower on rolling starts.
He joins a Louisville men’s class that already includes Josh Quillan from the Dayton Raiders, as the Cardinal stretch their recruiting influence into bordering Big Ten territory.
Though Louisville is right on Kentucky’s border with Indiana, Carroll goes to St. Joseph High School in South Bend – which is at the northern end of the state.
Trevor’s older brother Tony is a star at IUPUI – the hosts of this year’s NCAA Championships.
