LIVEBARN Race of the Week: MacNeil’s Pan Ams 50 Free Gold Propels Her Into Canadian History

The Canadian women have shown up in full force at the 2023 Pan American Games, led by Maggie MacNeil.

On the fourth day in Santiago, the 23-year-old MacNeil tied with American Gabi Albiero for gold in the women’s 50 freestyle. That marks her fourth gold medal of the meet, tying her with Jessica Deglau for most golds by a Canadian swimmer at a Pan Am Games. Deglau earned her four golds at the 1999 Pan American Games.

Three of those golds are from individual events. Earlier in the meet, MacNeil won the 100 butterfly (56.94) and 100 freestyle (53.64), setting new Pan Am records in both events.

Here in the 50 freestyle, MacNeil and Albiero stopped the clock at 22.84. The time is just off her personal best of 24.79, which she swam at March 2023’s Canadian Trials. It’s the 2nd fastest performance in her career, and is the fastest that she’s been in the 2023-24 season.

After the race, MacNeil told CBC Sports “”I’m happy that I could tie for the win. It’s still new swimming freestyle for me internationally. The good thing is this is obviously one of my weaker events — I really miss having that extra wall. So I’m really happy with that.”
