Lilly King Becomes the Third-Fastest American Female 100 Breaststroker

Tonight in the third day of finals at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, Lilly King of Indiana University became the third-fastest American female 100 breaststroker in history with her winning 1:05.20.

With this swim, King bypasses Katie Meili and Katy Freeman in the all-time American rankings. Her previous best time was a 1:05.73, ranked fifth. You can see the fastest Americans in history below:

1. Jessica Hardy: 1:04.45 (2009)
2. Rebecca Soni: 1:04.84 (2009)
3. Lilly King: 1:05.20 (2016)
4. Katie Meili: 1:05.64 (2015)
5. Kasey Carlson: 1:05.73 (2009)

With that swim, King also bypasses Russia’s Yulia Efimova to become the fastest swimmer in the world this year.

At the turn, King was ahead of the field with 30.43, and despite a late charge from SwimMAC’s Katie Meili, King was able to hold off the field by over three-quarters of a second.

Meili swam the event in 1:06.07, and both swimmers will (incredibly likely) represent the United States of America in Rio this summer.
