The Canadians pulled off the victory in the mixed 4×50 free relay, thanks in large part to 19-year-old Josh Liendo’s 20.94 opening split. While leadoff splits do not officially count for records, that swim is four tenths faster than Brent Hayden’s current Canadian Record of 21.34. He was followed by Yuri Kisil who split 20.99, Kayla Sanchez (23.51) and Maggie MacNeil (23.11).

Why doesn’t his split count as an official record?
Mixed relay leadoffs often don’t count for records.
Exactly. Going back as far as that mixed relay in the US in which Libby Trickett lead off HER relay, swimming against lead off for the US, who I may be wrong but I believe was Michael Phelps- both swimming 100 meters long course free in a mixed free relay. (can’t right off recall, but might have been in Indianapolis and the meet perhaps called Duel in the Pool?). This is a good ten years or more ago, and at the time, since the mixed relays were practically brand new, I think I recall there being a lot of confusion as to why LIbby’s 100 free lead off swim would not count as a WR. It happened during the 2007 Duel in the Pool which was held in Sydney, Australia, on early April, following the Worlds. It was the last meeting Usa vs Australia. I reminded that Phelps defeated Peirsol in the 200 back and Sullivan in the 100 free.
