Women’s and Men’s Swimming & Diving Assistant Coach and Athletics Communications Assistant

General Responsibility:

In collaboration with the Mary Frances Wagley Head Coach of Swimming and Diving, the assistant coaching responsibilities include assisting in the management of all facets of the Women’s and Men’s Swimming & Diving programs to include but not limited to: recruiting, administration, budget management, alumni stewardship, scheduling of competitions, team travel, weekly practice sessions, advising of students, managing social media accounts and compliance with NCAA and NEWMAC conference rules and regulations. In addition, this position will be responsible for duties assigned under the supervision and direction of the Director of Athletics Communications.

 

Essential Duties:

In collaboration with the Mary Frances Wagley Head Coach, assist in leading a high-quality, nationally competitive varsity program that is challenging, well-organized and administered based on sound coaching techniques and instructional strategies and has a positive retention rate. These duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Coaching:
  • Strong knowledge of swimming skills and strategies in one or more areas (e.g., event group training, technique work, practice writing, season planning, strength and conditioning, etc.)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of people in a diverse community
  • Ensure proper safety precautions regarding student-athlete training and health, are followed at all times, including DAPER Risk Management procedures and understanding campus resources around mental health and wellness
  • Recruiting:
  • Assist in all facets of the recruiting process for both Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving programs. These duties are included but not limited to:
  • Identify, assess and contact prospective student-athletes that are academically and athletically qualified for a competitive program at a highly selective STEM institution
  • Organize various recruiting events throughout the academic year
  • Recruit diverse student-athletes that are reflective of the values of the greater MIT community
  • Administration:
  • Create Hy-Tek meet manager files, complete team manager updates, results reporting to the NCAA, NEWMAC and Athletics Communications
  • Coordinate apparel orders and equipment distribution and return
  • Sport-specific budget reconciliation, when appropriate
  • In collaboration with members of the athletic department and/or Resources Development Officers, assist with stewardship responsibilities including creating alumni newsletters and attending departmental alumni activities
  • Participate in collaborative activities across MIT, Division for Student Life and DAPER through meetings, events and activities. These duties include but are limited to:
  • Attendance and participation in DAPER meetings and committee assignments
  • When requested, serve on MIT, DAPER, DSL and Aquatics search committees
  • Adherence to regulations associated with MIT, conference and national governance regulations (NCAA) at the NCAA Division III membership level
  • Member in good standing in sport’s national coaches association or governing body
  • Communications:
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Athletics Communications, complete assigned tasks and fulfill responsibilities as directed and outlined
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:

2-4 years coaching experience preferably at the college/university level. A bachelor’s degree is required: a master’s degree is preferred.  Proven experience in recruiting to a highly selective institution desirable.  Administrative, interpersonal/communication skills and computer skills are essential. Writing and graphic design experience desirable. Knowledge of Hy-Tek software required. Appropriate certifications in First Aid, CPR, AED, and Biohazards are required within 30 days of hire. Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a background check.
