About the Position:

The Assistant Coach provides teaching, coaching, and technical expertise needed to allow the student-athlete to compete at their highest competitive potential, including all coaching and/or teaching duties associated with the program. This includes the oversight and management of the safety and well-being of those student athletes assigned to their coaching care. In the absence of the Head Coach, the Assistant Coach is expected to act on behalf of the Head Coach on any and all related program issues. The Assistant Coach assists the Head Coach in all aspects of a highly competitive Division I program.

 

This position requires flexible working hours, including evenings and weekends.

 

Responsibilities:

Teaching and Coaching

  • Utilizes sound teaching techniques in the conduct of game preparation and practice sessions;
  • Assists in making strategic decisions in contest situations;
  • Effectively prepares and organizes pre-season, in-season and post-season conditioning programs and practice sessions;
  • Oversees the strength and conditioning development of the athletes;
  • Assists the Head Coach in the evaluation of the student-athlete; and
  • Remains aware, and maintains a safe and healthy environment for the student-athlete.

 

Department, University, Conference and NCAA Compliance

  • Abides by and promotes the aims, goals, and objectives established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach;
  • Abides by and promotes the policies, guidelines, rules, regulations and criteria established by the Athletic Director and Head Coach for the student-athlete;
  • Knows, understands and assures that the student-athletes abide by all the University, Atlantic 10, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Rules and Regulations;
  • Knows, understands and abides by all University, A10 and NCAA Rules and Regulations;
  • Remains aware and abides by the rules of confidentiality (Buckley Amendment);
  • Understands and abides by proper procedures of due process in dealing with the student-athlete and staff;

  • Academic Services (study hall and tutoring).

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree or a combination of training and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree;
  • Demonstrated experience coaching at the college level and/or professional experience in the field of swim;
  • Knowledge and understanding of Atlantic 10, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Rules and Regulations;
  • Solid demonstrated knowledge of the sport, including rules, strategies, and techniques;
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Advanced organizational and time-management skills;
  • Ability to motivate and inspire players to achieve their full potential;
  • Ability to demonstrate effective leadership qualities; and

Position Overview

Overview of Duties

Club Swim Coaching Duties

Growth Opportunity
A full-time position may be considered for the right candidate. Full-time status requires a minimum of 35+ hours per week and includes full medical benefits at 100% employer contribution. Full-time candidates must be willing and qualified to work an additional 10+ hours weekly of other program or facility operations such as: assisting with other groups, teaching swim lessons and/or facility maintenance.

Coaching Duties

  • Reports to Associate Head Coach
  • Plan and implement seasonal training in the water and execute SwimStrong dryland program
  • Communicate expectations with parents and athletes

WEST Coaching Responsibilities and Expectations

  • Coaches are required to demonstrate strong work ethics and characteristics consistent with WEST expectations including, but not limited to the following:
  • Demonstrate and model a high level of integrity, honesty, conscientiousness, and a growth mindset.
  • The ability to de-escalate conflict.
  • Swimmers have a high level of academic and social integrity, and respect for their teammates and the program.
    Swimmers understand “high level swimming” and are shown examples and opportunities to reach high levels of achievement (camps, summits, all-star teams, etc.)
  • Swimmers are consistently evaluated along their path through the program. Coaches guide swimmers back onto the path, or help them to understand walking a different path is also an option.
  • Time in water and practice frequency scales through the groups.
  • Creation of group targets to help guide both coaches and athletes through each group.
  • Coaches consistently check in on athletes to ensure they are meeting target goals as they progress through their group.
  • Parent <> swimmer <> coach relationships improved through proactive, meaningful communication. At this level, communication begins equally between the parents and the swimmers. However, as swimmers age through the group, communication responsibility begins to shift primarily to the swimmer.

Compensation
Base Pay: $27.50-$29.50/hour. This is currently a part-time hourly position and pay rate will reflect the candidate’s experience, however, there is opportunity for this to be full time!
Benefits: This position includes medical, vision and dental insurance with a 50% employer contribution (full time employee benefits are covered at 100%.)
End-Of-Year Bonus: during profitable years, the board will award a portion of profits to be split between employees based on individual performance, contribution and longevity.
Paid Holiday: 1 week (26.25 hours) in April, 1 week (26.25 hours) in August (full time employees will receive 2 weeks in August.)
Paid Vacation: 1 week (26.25 hours) undesignated with approval. Resets annually on 9/1 and does not roll over.

The Assistant Swim Coach is responsible for aiding the Head Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Coach in the execution of practices and meet day instruction/coaching, as well some recruiting and administrative duties. This position supports the development of student-athletes through mentorship, guidance, leadership opportunities, community building, and a commitment to social justice.  This is a professional assistant coaching position and all of the duties of the position must be conducted in adherence with the policies, rules, and regulations of affiliated national, regional, and state intercollegiate athletic associations, the NESCAC Conference and the College. This position reports to the Head Coach.

Job Duties:

  • Completes all required departmental and institutional training and certification programs and participates actively in available professional development opportunities.
  • Assists in the recruitment of student-athletes as directed by the head coach. Ensures full compliance with NESCAC, and NCAA guidelines in all aspects of the recruiting process.
  • Responsible for identifying qualified prospective students and guiding them through the recruitment process.
  • Provides leadership and instruction in the personal and athletic development of student-athletes, including counseling team members in academic, disciplinary and personal matters.
  • Monitors the eligibility status and academic progress of student-athletes and identifies issues which must be brought to the head coach and department administration.
  • Adheres to and enforces all policies and procedures of the Department of Athletics & Physical Education and the College as well as the rules and regulations of the NESCAC, NCAA and other authorities that may legitimately influence the intercollegiate athletics program.
  • Provides support in carefully tracking expenditures for all team accounts to ensure fiscal responsibility.
  • Assists the head coach in developing and implementing strategies for motivating student-athletes to perform at maximum levels as both individuals and a team.
  • Assists with approved fund-raising activities as requested and coordinates all such efforts through the Director of Athletics and Office of College Advancement.

Friends Select Aquatics is a USA Swimming club that competes year-round in the Middle Atlantic LSC. FSA has approximately 100 swimmers and continues to grow each year. Specific hours may vary based on group and coach availability and schedule. Qualified candidates should be capable of working at least 2 evenings per week and/or weekends.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop quality swimmers through the established curriculum focused on fundamental stroke technique
  • Assess the needs of each swimmer and provide appropriate support and guidance
  • Collaborate and communicate regularly with other coaches
