Summary of Position

Assists in coaching, recruiting, counseling, conditioning, and evaluating for the team as directed. Responsible for instructing student-athletes in how to perform their sport which may also include teaching courses related to competition in varsity athletic programs.

Position Information

Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Implements coaching strategies and methods to help student athletes’ growth in athletic, interpersonal, academic, and teamwork skills; analyzes performance of team and adjusts strategies as needed; plans and conducts practices and other activities in preparation for competition; and actively recruits competitive and qualified individuals.

Assists with the management of the team budget; monitors expenditures to ensure that proscribed limitations are adhered; ensures that all expenditures are properly documented and in compliance with university and NCAA regulations; prepares expenditure reports as directed.

Conducts promotional activities for fundraising, recruitment, community service, and other marketing activities; attends promotional events, community activities, and fundraisers; prepares promotional materials for distribution; prepares and delivers speeches and presentations at local community groups, fundraisers, athlete events, etc.

Assists with the administration of policies and procedures with respect to academic expectations for team members; communicates with academic advising staff regarding athletic academic performance; meets with athletes to review course load issues, degree requirements, course selections, etc.; counsel athletes on performance issues, study skills, and techniques for academic success.

Helps identify and develop team strategy for recruitment; analyzes future needs; creates promotional strategy for contacting and recruiting prospective student athletes; develops promotional correspondence and materials for distribution to prospective recruits; conducts recruiting calls, trips and activities; recommends athletic aid to targeted recruits.

Oversees assigned course loads; compiles lesson plans and related course materials; receives and responds to student inquiries; provides instruction to students in applicable subject matter; reviews student performance to determine appropriate grade or credit.

Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

Other Functions and Responsibilities: Films practices, games, and strength training sessions as requested.

Manages equipment inventory and related duties.

Drives passenger vans as required.

Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

Plans, coordinates, and executes travel, meals, and lodging for the team.

Tracks and reports student-athlete CARA hours.

Performs any and all other related duties as assigned or directed in order to promote, further, and ensure the effective and efficient operation of YSU.

Equipment Operated: Computer and all other standard office equipment.

Work Schedule: Travel and nontraditional hours.

Supervision Exercised: Supervision is exercised over support staff on temporary or intermittent basis and full supervision and management of program is exercised in absence of head coach.

Reports to: Head Coach, Swimming and Diving

Qualifications and Competencies

Required Certifications, Training, and/or Licensures: CPR/AED/First Aid certifications; annual proficiency in NCAA Certification to Recruit.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

Knowledge of: NCAA rules and regulations; University policies and procedures*; office practices and procedures; department/division goals and objectives*; workplace safety practices and procedures*; English grammar and spelling; records management.

Skill in: Use of office equipment; typing, data entry; computer operation; Microsoft office suite, especially Excel and Word; use of computer software and other programs applicable to the assigned department/division*.

Ability to: Exhibit strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; determine material and equipment needs; use proper research methods to gather data; understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; maintain records according to established procedures; effectively interact with personnel and public to answer routine questions; train or instruct others; move quickly and effectively from one tasks to another; work independently and in a team environment; develop and maintain effective working relationships.

Minimum Qualifications:  At least a bachelor’s degree; one or more years of collegiate swimming coach experience; demonstrated experience in planning and preparation for meets and practices, and on deck coaching; demonstrated effective communication skills; knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications: Multiple years of collegiate coaching experience; experience in recruiting by phone and in person; experience with fundraising; experience in planning and execution of large group travel including transportation, meals, and lodging; experience in data tracking and meet management.
