Job Description

The Aquatics Director, reporting to the Senior Program Director, is responsible for creating, staffing, scheduling, and implementing all aquatics and competitive aquatics programming that is high quality and member focused.  Additional aquatics director duties include, but are not limited to hiring, scheduling, and training all lifeguard and instructional staff, develop and maintain operational budget, and supervise assistant aquatics director and swim lessons coordinator.

As the head coach, he/she will create season plans, daily training programs, hire and supervise assistant coaches, organize/attend swim meets, coordinate with local governing body, and work with the team parent association.


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred.
  • One to two years related administrative experience preferred
  • Competitive coaching experience required. ASCA certification preferred.
  • Minimum age requirement of 21.
  • Typical requirements within 30-90 days of hire include completion of: Child Abuse Prevention Training; CPR; First Aid; AED; LGI Certification and PA Pesticides License, USA/YMCA Coaching Certifications.
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific and trainer certifications.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.


Essential Functions

  • Directs and supervises program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives.
  • Have knowledge of proper swimming skills and be able to communicate these clearly to swimmers.
  • Establish new and expand existing programs within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Recruit, hire, train, develop, schedule and direct personnel and volunteers as needed.

Review and evaluates staff performance.

Develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.

Ensure records of staff certifications are current and complete.

  • Monitor daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
    • Conduct and ensure proper maintenance of pools.
    • Secure and schedule pool facilities.
    • Maintain accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
    • Ensure first aid equipment and supplies are stocked and up to date.
  • Conduct lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings.
  • Create and schedule for swim classes, water fitness classes, swim team practices and meets.
  • Assist in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Develop and monitors program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Models relationship-building skills (including Listen First) in all interactions. Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  • Collaborate with Board Of Director Committee and Swim Team Parents Association
  • Compile program statistics. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in program.
  • Coordinate all aspects of the Waves Swim Team
    • Season planning
    • On deck coaching
    • Attend parent association meetings
    • Coordinate and maintain coaching credentials for staff
    • Attend league meetings
    • Generate yearly competition schedule
    • Coordinate pool usage with new local high school program



Required Certifications

  • Valid Driver’s License & Clean Driving Record
  • Current or Completed within 90 days of employment
    • Complete CPR/AED, First Aid, and Lifeguard Certification
    • CPO training/ PA Pesticide license
    • YMCA and USA Swimming coaching certifications



$36,000.00 – $41,000.00, Full- time salary exempt with benefits including health, leave and retirement when vested. Relocation assistance may be available for those who qualify.
