ST. MARY’S CITY, MD – The Johns Hopkins women’s swim team claimed first through third place in 10 of the first 11 events en route to a 172-66 win at St. Mary’s on Friday afternoon in a long course (50-meter) meet. The fourth-ranked Blue Jays improve to 4-1 overall while the Seahawks fall to 6-5. Senior Taylor Kitayama led the way for the Blue Jays with a pair of individual wins, while eight other Blue Jays picked up an individual win.
In a prelude of things to come, Hopkins opened the meet by sweeping the top three spots in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of junior Hannah Benn and freshmen Pilar Shimizu, Abby Brown and Kailyn Koh won the event with a time of 2:06.56. Taking second place were junior Melinda Yau, senior Katie Rownd, freshman Sarah Westley and senior Kylie Ternes in 2:09.47. And coming in third were sophomore Sean McGrath, freshmen Helena Arose and Shirley Chan, and junior Kylie Holden.
Kitayama then led a contingent of four Blue Jays that placed first, second, third and fifth in the 200 Free as she touched in 2:11.63. Junior Sammi Fox took second in 2:18.11, followed by freshman Lindsay Kriz in 2:19.89 (third) and senior Sarah Rinsma in 2:22.87 (fifth). Hopkins turned the same trick in the 50 Back and 50 Breast. Bogdanovski led the way in the Back with a winning time of 32.67. Freshman Kristen Kaiser placed second with a time of 34.22, freshman Jane Nester took third in 34.85 and sophomore Ellen Marcus placed fifth in 34.96.
Arose then won the 50 Breast as she edged out junior Melinda Yau by one-tenth of a second, touching in 38.40. Brown took third place as she finished in 40.20 and Holden took fifth place with a time of 40.90. Kriz followed with a win in the 100 Fly, touching the wall in 1:09.99 to win by nearly a second over St. Mary’s Brooke Raab. Freshman Keri Gawlik finished in third place with a time of 1:11.12. Hopkins then took the first four spots in the next two events, the 50 and 100 Free. Sophomore Megan Auzenbergs took the win in the 50 Free with a time of 29.49, beating out McGrath, who finished in 29.69. Shimizu placed third in 29.81 and Gawlik took fourth in 30.10. Marcus took the top spot in the 100 Free with a winning time of 1:02.04. Freshman Sarah Westley followed in second place as she touched in 1:03.49, followed by classmate Jane Nester (1:04.98) and Chan (1:06.94).
Fox picked up a win in the 100 Back, clocking in at 1:11.64, to lead three Blue Jays in the top three spots. Freshman Ariana Waitkavicz then took second in 1:14.33 to just beat out junior Jillian Liwacz by six-hundredths of a second and junior Selena Guerrero-Martin placed fifth in 1:16.49. Shimizu followed with a win in the 100 Breast, winning in 1:19.87. Arose then placed second in 1:23.93 and Kaiser placed third in 1:25.79.
Hopkins once again took the top three spots as freshman Emily Lubin won the 400 Free with a time of 4:47.75. Rownd followed in second place in 4:55.35 and Benn placed third in 4:58.02. The Blue Jays did one better in the 50 Fly, taking first through fourth, in the last event before the Jays swam exhibition in the final two events. Kitayama grabbed her second win of the day, taking first place in 29.54. Ternes took second place (30.77), followed by Rinsma in third (31.58) and Liwacz in fourth (32.39).

The Blue Jays remain unbeaten as they improve to 5-0, while the Seahawks fall to 4-7 after the long-course (50-meter) meet. Freshman Scott Sterrett led Hopkins with a pair of individual wins, while eight other Blue Jays each won an individual event.
Hopkins opened the meet with first and second-place finishes in the 200 Medley Relay. Seniors Will Kimball andAnthony Lordi, junior Greg Kogut and senior David Woodford took the win with a time of 1:55.71. Taking second place in 1:56.00 were junior Ryan Cunningham, sophomore Justin Tang and freshmen Kyle Verdeyen and Jeremy Bauchwitz. The Blue Jays then took first through fourth in the next five events to put distance between themselves and the Seahawks. Freshman Andrew Greenhalgh kicked off the streak of big wins with the 200 Free, taking first in 1:59.15. Freshman Patrick Flynn placed second in 2:01.96, followed closely by classmate Josh Hughes just 0.12 seconds later. Sophomore Billy Gravley wrapped up the sweep with a fourth-place finish and a time of 2:05.82.
Junior Dylan Davis won the 50 Back, clocking in at 28.55 while senior Joe Acquaviva took second in 29.83. Woodford placed third in 30.15 and Kimball took fourth in 30.72. Sterrett followed with the first of his two wins, taking the top spot in the 50 Breast in a time of 33.50. Freshman Austin Bridges touched in 34.00 for second, followed by junior Aaron Katrikh (37.10) and freshman Connor Johnson (38.90). Tang then won 100 Fly as he touched in 1:00.99, while freshman Evan Holder took second in 1:02.20. Freshman Muhammad Hudhud placed third with a time of 1:02.71 and Verdeyen clocked in just 0.15 seconds later for fourth place.
Kogut picked up a win in the 50 Free, beating Acquaviva to the wall by seven-hundredths of a second to win with a time of 25.95. Katrikh placed third in 26.21 and Hughes took fourth with a time of 26.46. Bauchwitz followed with a win in the 100 Free, touching in 54.50. Cunningham took a close second with a time of 54.71, while Katrikh placed third in 56.82. Flynn then won the 100 Back by nearly two seconds, touching in 1:02.65. Lordi placed second with a time of 1:04.57 and Johnson placed fourth in 1:11.99.
The Blue Jays then swept the top three spots in the 100 Breast, followed by the top four in the 400 Free and 50 Fly before swimming exhibition in the final two events. Sterrett grabbed his second win, clocking in at 1:11.71 to win the 100 Breast. Freshman Evan Holder placed second in 1:12.14, followed by Hudhud in third with a time of 1:14.90. Gravley followed with the win in the 400 Free as he beat the field to the wall in 4:20.92. Tang took second in 4:23.76, beating classmate Michael McGoldrick by just four-hundredths of a second, and Davis followed in fourth with a time of 4:24.49. Lordi wrapped things up by taking the top spot in the 50 Fly with a time of 27.17 while Acquaviva touched in 27.69 for second. Woodford placed third with a time of 28.12 and Kimball took fourth place in 28.69.
