University of Chicago swim and dive was back in action over the weekend, first celebrating their seniors against IUPUI at home before hitting the road to take on Hope in Michigan. The Maroons won three of the four team duals against the Jaguars and the Flying Dutchmen and look to be in fine form as they now turn their attention to the UAA Championships in February.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• vs. IUPUI
  • The Maroons started off their weekend by hosting IUPUI for Senior Night inside the Ratner Athletic Center. The women were victors by a comfortable margin, but the men lost the meet to their Jaguar counterparts by just four points.
  • One swimmer that took full advantage of the Senior Night activities was fourth year Garrett Clasen. His time in the 100 IM (48.99) not only broke the Myers-McLoraine Pool record, it also tied the NCAA record in the event.
  • There were a few other excellent performances as well. The men’s 200 Medley Relay (1:27.51) was less than a half second off the school record while Jesse Ssengonzi and Spencer Dearman joined Clasen in earning NCAA B-Cuts at the dual. On the women’s side, Veronica Fong earned two B-Cuts with her wins in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives while NouNou Chang was just a few tenths of a second off another Maroon’s school record while achieving B-Cut status in the 100 fly (55.74).
• vs. Hope
  • Both teams breezed to another easy victory on Saturday when they traveled to Michigan to take on Hope. The women took home the victory by 33 points while the men blew out their opponents by almost 100 tallies.
  • The men had 12 individual wins with Tristan Ide (100 Breast, 200 Breast) and Cooper Costello (100 Back, 100 Fly) claiming two victories each while the Maroons sat out the diving events during the meet.
  • The women came away with 10 individual wins two of which came from Veronica Fong as she swept the events she participated in throughout the weekend. Alesha Kelly won both the 100 and 200 Fly which helped them win their fourth dual in a row and locked in a 8-1 record during the 2023-24 season.

WHAT’S NEXT
The Maroon divers will hit the pool next weekend at the UIC Invite but the rest of the team won’t see action until they hit the pool inside the Ratner Athletic Center for the 2024 UAA Swim and Dive Championships. The four-day event will begin on Wednesday, February 14^th at 12:45 pm.

CHICAGO – The IUPUI swim and dive team split with Chicago on Friday with the men’s team defeating the Maroons while the women’s team fell. Emmaleigh Zietlow, Nathan Rariden and Sebastian Otero led the Jags with two wins each.

Leading the men’s team to victory was freshman Rariden, as he collected two individual wins. Rariden earned first in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.64 and won the 500 free with a time of 4:36.40.

Other first-place finishes from the men’s swim team came from Youssef Magdy (1000 free – 9:34.68), Jack Gallob (100 back – 50.40) and Logan Kelly (100 breast – 54.93).

Emmaleigh Zietlow led the women’s team with two individual wins. She took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:50.36 then doubled down, winning the 500 free with a time of 4:55.03.

Other top finishes from the women’s team came from junior Lillian Brandt (50 free – 24.35) and senior Lauren Thompson (100 back – 59.78).

On the boards, Sebastian Otero swept the men’s competition with wins in both the 3-meter and 1-meter while Alaina Heyde earned the win in the 1-meter dive. Otero took first in the 1-meter with a score of 335.03, then completed the sweep with a score of 391.65 in the 3-meter. Heyde earned first in the 1-meter with a score of 280.80.

The men’s team took the win with a team score of 121 to Chicago’s 117. The women’s team fell by a margin of 131-106. Both teams will be back in action tomorrow when they compete in the UIC Invitational.
