Bacon, Newmark Lead Wisconsin To Sweep of Green Bay

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women’s swimming and diving teams (7-0, 3-0 BIG) rolled to another dual win Friday night at Soderholm Family Aquatic Center. The Badgers picked up all 14 event wins to finish the meet with a 218-76 victory over Green Bay.

Senior and team captain Phoebe Bacon started the meet off strong with a win in the 200 free with a time of 1:47.82. Bacon was followed by Abby Wanezek in second place with a 1:50.35, with Emily Ecker trailing in third with a 1:51.48.

Wanezek earned her first individual event win of the season in the 200 back, hitting the wall first in 2:03.51. Junior and team captain Mackenzie McConagha led the Badger sweep in the 100 backstroke, touching the wall first in 51.46. Kaylyn Schoof followed in second with a 54.68, and Kit Schneider snuck into third with a 56.75.

Sophomore Hazal Ozkan earned two individual event wins on Friday night. Ozkan won the 200 IM in 1:59.51, with Katie McClintock not far behind her in second with a time of 2:00.38. She also won the 100 free with a season-best time of 50.97.

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men’s swimming and diving team (5-1, 3-0 BIG) wrapped up the home portion of its schedule with a dual meet win over Green Bay on Friday at the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center. The Badgers picked up 14 event wins to finish the meet with a 178-97 victory over the Phoenix.

Freshman Luukas Vainio continues to shine in the long-distance freestyle, starting the Badgers off strong with a win in the 1000 free with a season-best time of 9:04.53. Charlie Jones kept up the long-distance freestyle momentum with a win in the 500 free with a time of 4:23.19. Nico Butera placed second with a time of 4:34.84.

Senior Jake Newmark picked up a couple of individual event wins on Friday, including the 100 free in 45.38. Newmark also hit the wall first in the 200 free, with a time of 1:37.95. Jude Williams followed him, placing second with a time of 1:39.48.

Sophomore Dominik Mark Torok continues to dominate in the 100 fly, earning another first-place finish against the Phoenix. Torok won the event in 47.30 to lead the Badger sweep, with Nathan Welker right behind in second with a time of 47.61 and Truman Teduits in third with a final time of 49.19.

MADISON, Wis. – The Green Bay swim and dive teams flew just a couple of hours south to the Wisconsin state capitol to take on the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday night. Wisconsin outscored GB on the women’s side 218-76 and 178-97 on the men’s side.

MEN

Max Kasal continued a strong season by leading the Phoenix men in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 1:40.11 to place third. Jack MerkatorisEthan Braatz, and Carson Beals finished right behind Kasal in fourth through sixth place, respectively. In the men’s 100-yard freestyle, Braatz paced the squad with a time of 48.18, collecting four points for GB while finishing within a few seconds of first place. Eli Zimmerman led the charge in the 200-yard backstroke with a final time of 1:54.03, taking second place. Teammate Aaron Klym recorded a third-place finish, less than nine-tenths of a second behind Zimmerman.

WOMEN

Esther Oswald started the evening on the right foot by collecting a fourth-place completion of the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.05. Grace Focault and Nellie Sherrick weren’t far behind the three-year veteran. In the 100-yard butterfly, GB recorded six of the top eight finishers. Bailey Venden placed third behind Wisconsin’s Hailey Tierney and Kaylyn Schoof. Venden tallied three points for the Phoenix while recording a final time of 1:02.41. McKenna MetropulosMia PagelBetsey WalkowiakKelsey Kobus, and Morgan Allison were the other Phoenix on the leaderboard in fourth through eighth place, respectively.

DIVING

Annie Frederickson continued her strong freshman campaign with a 3rd place finish in the one and three-meter diving events. Junior Andy Groebner also grabbed a third-place finish on the one-meter with one of his best performances of the year.

COMING UP
The Phoenix will have a quick turnaround to its next meet, which is tomorrow at 1 p.m. versus Milwaukee at the Peter F. Dorschel Natatorium inside the Kress Center.
