Isabel Gose Breaks 1500 Freestyle German Record For Her First Olympic Medal

Isabel Gose earned her first Olympic medal in style. She surged ahead for bronze in the women’s 1500 freestyle after battling Simona Quadarella for the majority of the race. Gose charged home, earning her medal in 15:41.16, setting a new German record in the event.

She broke Sarah Wellbrock (neé Kohler)’s record in the event, which stood at 15:42.91 from the Tokyo Games. Wellbrock’s performance there was a bit of German history, as it marked the German women’s first Olympic medal since 2008. Now just three years later, Gose has given the German women a medal streak of two Olympic Games.

Gose broke the Wellbrock’s record by 1.75 seconds. She undercut her personal best by even more; before today, her lifetime best was a 15:50.56 from last month’s Sette Colli. That’s a 9.40 second drop for the 22-year-old in a little over a month. In addition to her German record, Gose rises in the all-time European rankings. She’s now fourth as both she and silver medalist Anastasia Kirpichnikova moved into the all-time top five with their performances today.

This is Gose’s second national record performance of the meet. In the women’s 400 freestyle final, she reset her national record with a 4:02.14 for 5th place. Gose still has the 800 freestyle left on her schedule this week. There, she holds a lifetime best of 8:17.53 from the 2024 World Championships. After her performances already this week, she’s sure to be eyeing Wellbrock’s 8:16.43 German record from the 2019 World Championships.
