Iowa Hawkeyes Claim Season-Opening Win Over In-State Rival Northern Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – University of Iowa swimming and diving defeated in-state opponent, Northern Iowa, 173-127, at Glen F. Henry Pool on Friday afternoon.

“Tonight was a total team effort to earn the win against a really good UNI team,” Iowa Head Coach Nathan Mundt said. “We had some great performances by Olivia Swalley, Makayla Hughbanks, Olivia Frantum, and Annie Galvin to begin the season. Now can learn what we can do better heading into our next meet two weeks from tonight.”

The Iowa divers started the day strong for the Hawkeyes. Senior Makayla Hughbanks collected two individual wins in both the 1-meter (289.73) and 3-meter (305.25) dives, respectively. Junior Lainey Woodward and senior Geneva Pauly added points for the Hawkeyes as well. Woodward got second in the 1-meter with a score of 267.75 and Pauly came in third in the 3-meter with a score of 240.38.

The Hawkeye swimmers tallied eight individual wins and one relay win. Sophomore Olivia Swalley earned three first-place finishes in both the 100 (1:03.17) and 200 breaststroke (2:18.77) and in the 200 IM (2:03.40). Senior Annie Galvin and sophomore Olivia Frantum added two wins of their own as well. Galvin swept the 100 (56.40) and 200 (2:03.38) backstroke and Frantum won the 500 (5:05.89) and 1,000 (10:24.59) freestyle.

Galvin, Swalley, junior Scarlet Martin, and freshman Nora Kemp led the Hawkeyes 200 Medley Relay to first place with a time of 1:45.11.

The Hawkeyes return home to take on Big Ten opponent, Nebraska, on Oct. 18, at 4 p.m. in the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City, Iowa.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The UNI swimming and diving team on Friday officially kicked off the 2024-25 season at home with a dual meet against Iowa, falling to the Hawkeyes by a score of 173-127 loss inside the Glen F. Henry Pool at the Wellness-Recreation Center.

Northern Iowa started off the night off strong in the 200-yard medley relay with a second-place effort from the team of Elyse BraytonSydney AirdHannah Nedder and Faith Larsen with a time of 1:45.58. In the 1,000 yard freestyle, Paige SeehawerMolly Johnson and Abigail Barkhurst finished in third, fourth and fifth places respectively with times of 10:57.47, 11:07.09 and 11:10.50.

Morgan Meyer placed second in the 200-yard freestyle for the purple and gold, while Brayton notched her the first top-three individual finish of her collegiate career with a third-place effort in the 100-yard backstroke (57.58). Aird came in second place for UNI in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.15, followed by Ema Lavigne in third (1:08.22) and Aspen Cole in fourth (1:10.94).

Nikki Walters topped the podium for the Panthers in the 200-yard butterfly with a winning time of 2:09.35, as freshman Sam Oeltjen came in fourth in her collegiate debut in 2:12.83. Larsen grabbed UNI’s second victory of the night in the 50-yard freestyle as the two-time reigning Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) champion clocked a winning time of 24.38 seconds. Nedder followed Larsen in fourth place (24.69). Meyer also finished first for Northern Iowa in the 100-yard freestyle (52.07), with Lear coming in fourth with a time of 53.69.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, Aird recorded another second place finish in 2:27.05 with Jenna Breitbach taking third (2:29.37), Cole fourth (2:33.90) and Crystal Benjamin fifth (2:36.97). Domnick put on a strong showing for the Panthers in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:18.12 to take third place, followed by Oeltjen taking home fourth place (5:19.82) and Natalie Harris fifth (5:22.84). Nedder would lead the field with a first-place effort in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking a winning time of 57.72 seconds, with Walters close behind in fourth (59.35).

Lavigne led UNI in the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.71), while the 400-yard freestyle relay squad of Meyer, Larsen, Lear and Domnick came in first place with a winning time of 3:29.84.

In the diving well, junior Erica Peters took second place in the three-meter for the Panthers with a score of 253.05, with Avery Hogan taking fourth (239.78). In the one-meter competition, sophomore Trista Thompson came in third for Northern Iowa with a score of 260.63, followed by Peters in fifth (254.25).

The Panthers will head to Rochester, Minnesota, Nov. 1–2 for a Quad Dual against St. Cloud State, South Dakota, and South Dakota State at the Rochester Recreation Center.
