HS Junior Mary Smutny Announces Verbal Commitment to Texas

Mary Smutny, who hails from Cutler Bay, Florida, has announced on social media that she plans to attend the University of Texas beginning in the fall of 2019. A junior in high school, Smutny is homeschooled and swims for AquaKids Sharks Swim Team.

“Beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Texas! Huge shoutout to my coach, friends, and family for helping me get here! Stoked to become a longhorn!! ?? #hookem

Smutny is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and NISCA All-American who competed in the 2016 Florida 1A State Championships as a sophomore, swimming for South Florida Home Educated Athletic Teams. There she was runner-up in the 200 free (1:46.62) and took fourth in the 100 free (50.03) individually, and she anchored the SFHL 200 free relay (23.39) and 400 free relay (52.34). As a freshman she was 7th in the 200 free and 7th in the 500.

Smutny does her club swimming with AquaKids Sharks Swim Team, where she is a free/fly specialist with national-level (Winter Juniors and faster) in the 50/100/200/500 free and 100/200 fly in both SCY and LCM, and the SCY 100 back and 200/400 IM as well as the LCM 800 free. Smutny went PBs in the 100/200/500 free and 100 fly at 2017 Winter Juniors East. She was runner-up in the 200 free, third in the 500 free, 10th in the 100 fly, 14th in the 200 fly, and 18th in the 100 free. She also competed in the 50 free, 100 back, and 200 IM.

Smutny is an all-around talent who will be able to slot into a number of spots for the Longhorns; she will be an especially lethal weapon for the freestyle relays. Smutny’s best 200 fly time would have won the title at the 2017 Big 12 Championships; her best 200 free time would have placed 2nd, and her 100 free, 500 free and 100 fly would have been 3rd.

Best SCY times:

  • 100 free – 49.48
  • 200 free – 1:45.36
  • 500 free – 4:42.80
  • 200 fly – 1:56.58
  • 100 fly – 53.81
  • 200 IM – 2:02.82
