Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu has broken her 3rd World Record in two days, with this one coming in the women’s 100 short course meters IM at the first stop of the 2013 FINA World Cup circuit in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
There, she went a 57.73 to break the old record by .01 seconds. The old mark belonged to the Netherlands’Â Hinkelien Schreuder, who was 57.74 in 2009.
This swim follows Hosszu’s twice-breaking the World Record in the 200 IM on Wednesday.
The comparative splits show what one might expect: Hosszu is a much better butterflier and backstroker than Schreuder was, but Schreuder has a whale of a finish on her freestyle leg:
Hosszu 26.39/31.34 = 57.73
Schreuder 26.82/30.92 = 57.74
Unlike in previous years, the new-and-improved World Cup rules have put no limit on World Record bonus payouts (as compared to the cap of 5 from previous years). Barring a clarification from FINA on that matter, expect Hosszu and the rest of this field to continue to rack up World Record checks as the meet wears on.
For the Chad leclos debate,
who remembers this?

Should’ve been a foreshadow….
Agnel toying with the 200 back .. finishes with a 1:57.12.
He must learn to swim many races now with Bob Bowman. And in the strokes he isn’t familar with.
It’s an interesting result to show to the crazy French fans and even to former great champions like Michel Rousseau that Yannick Agnel isn’t the next Michael Phelps. If you knew how many times I read or hear that stupid idea here in France. Mr Agnel will be Mr Agnel. A fantastic freestyle swimmer. Only a freestyle swimmer. And that’s not too bad at all.
The French think that Agnel is the next Phelps?
HAHAHAHA.
No wonder you think that I think Le Clos is the next Phelps.
Will she take vacations after Berlin?
Does she know the word vacations?
Yes, she will use the break to get married. The wedding will be on the Seychelles .
Female swimmer of the year? If you include her short course performance with long course, no one comes close.
I hope it’s a joke.
The female swimmer of the year will be of course a young girl who has won 4 world titles in Barcelona with 2 world records and another in textile.
Ledecky is of course the swimmer of the meet in Barcelona, but if the judges aggregated WRs, consistency, or other factors, it would be Hosszu. Not sure if they will count these swims as they’re voting, but just looking at the larger picture here. If they did, Hosszu would be winner.
Real swimming is in long course and Katie has made history in long course in Barcelona.
I don’t know, it says a lot about a swimmer to do what Hosszu is currently doing. To continue to swim, at a WR level, after when most swimmers are complete says a lot about their determination. I think a strong case can be made for Hosszu.
Philip,
I like your thinking but you’re ahead of your time. Swimming community still appreciates its most important meetings, almost exclusively, and that’s why swimming as a sport fades away after those meetings.
Philip,
I understand your rationale.
The same rationale is also applied in track&field where the performers of the year is not only based on their world championships or olympics, but also their results in the diamond league series.
After a 400 IM and a 200 fly!
BOOM!!
57.50 WR
SHE DID IT AGAIN! 57.50! 😯
There are many empty seats.
And the audience sleeps.
