It was a double repeat and one three-peat for San Antonio Great Hearts Monte Vista at the Texas 4A state finals on Feb. 14.
The girls’ program won its third straight title, while the boys successfully defended its title from last year. Both teams won going away.
GIRLS’ RECAP
Leading the way was Monte Vista junior twin sisters Jaylee and Averie Hager, who each won two individual events and were members of two winning relay teams for a Monte Vista team that won all three relay events.
Averie Hager was named girls’ swimmer of the meet after winning the 50 freestyle in a time of 23.02 and the 100 butterfly in a time of 53.85. Not only did she repeat as state champion in both events, but she broke her own meet records set last year.
“I wasn’t really thinking about breaking records,” Averie Hager said to the San Antonio Express-News. “It was just for the team and the team’s glory.”
Jaylee Hager (Notre Dame commit) also successfully defended two titles won last year, winning the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:50.30 and the 100 freestyle in a time of 50.85. J. Hager swam leadoff for Monte Vista’s winning team in the 200 medley relay, which finished with a time of 1:52.32. Other team members were Sarah Livesay, Glory Sansano and Sophie Murgo.
A. Hager swam second and J. Hager the anchor leg to help Monte Vista win the 200 freestyle relay in a meet record time of 1:37.17, breaking the 1:39.93 time Monte Vista set at last year’s event. Other team members were Holly VanderWeele (leadoff) and Teresa Cannon.
VanderWeele led off with a split of 24.40, A. Hager followed with a 23.35, Cannon went in third and produced a 26.46 split before J. Hager finished with a 22.96 split.
In the 400 freestyle relay, A. Hager swam the second leg for Monte Vista’s team which won in 3:41.15. Cadence Alford, Avarie Jury and VanderWeele were the other team members.
The other individual standout was Madeline Griffeth, a freshman from Great Hearts Northern Oaks. Griffeth won the 200 IM in a time of 2:09.95 and the 100 backstroke in a time of 56.36, which tied a state record.
Other individual winners were:
- Eve Shrader. The junior from Georgetown Gateway won the diving event with 379.05 points.
- Reagan Hix. A junior from Celina, Hix won the 500 freestyle in 5:07.36.
- Savina Smith. The sophomore from Gateway won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.25.

BOYS’ RECAP
While the Hager twins were the standouts in the girls’ event, Monte Vista junior Sawyer Stolarczyk was the star of the boys’ meet.
Stolarczyk set meet records in the 200 and 500 freestyle events. He repeated as champion in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.12, and then won the 500 freestyle in a record time of 4:36.95. He also swam anchor for Monte Vista’s winning team in the 200 freestyle relay, coming in with a 21.32 split to help Monte Vista to a time of 1:27.85.
The time broke the old meet record of 1:28.48 set in 2023 by CC Tuloso-Midway. Other team members were Peter Carrasco, David Dalley and Jonathan Dalley.
Comal Davenport junior Caleb Bristow also won two individual events, sweeping the sprint relays. He won the 50 freestyle in a time of 21.32 and the 100 freestyle in 47.26.
The other individual standout was Bosqueville senior Hudson Bawduniak, who first set a meet record of 49.23 to win the 100 butterfly. He then set another meet record in the 100 breaststroke, repeating as champion in that event with a time of 55.81.
Monte Vista’s team of David Dalley, Jimmy Piper, Jonathan Parsons and Jax Smith-Ruttan won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:37.91, while Decatur’s team of Johnathan Albaugh, Preston Dollins, Aaron Williamson and Logan Fultz won the 400 freestyle relay in a meet record time of 3:14.48, breaking the old record of 3:18.68 set in 2023 by Andrews.
Other individual winners were:
- Bryan Campbell. A junior from Lufkin Pineywoods, Campbell won the 200 IM in 1:56.12.
- Jonah Shelton. A junior from Corpus Christi London, Shelton captured the diving event in 367.40.
- David Dalley. After finishing second in the 100 backstroke last year, Dalley won the event this year in a time of 52.27.
