Gophers Chalk Up First Two Victories of 2013-14 Season

After taking both second and third places in the 400-yard medley relay, Goucher produced the champion and the runner-up in the first three individual events on the way to a pair of victories this afternoon in the von Borries Aquatics Center: 111-79 over Arcadia and 143-57 over Gallaudet.

The Knights (2-4) came away from the event with one win as they defeated the Bison (0-6), 123-79.

Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) and Cody Nelson (Duanesburg, N.Y./Schalmont) pulled off the 1-2 finish for the Gophers (2-3) in the 1,000-yard freestyle with Richter touching first in 11:05.90 and Nelson following in 11:18.75. In the 200 free, Jared Hermann (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) took first (2:00.49) and Andrew Coon (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) placed second (2:07.18).

Sam Davis (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) led Goucher’s 1-2 finish in the 50 free as he completed the event in :22.45, which was 2.15 second ahead of Grant Gerber (Portland, Maine/Casco Bay).

The Gophers continued to pad its lead over Arcadia and Gallaudet with first-place performances by Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne) in the 200 individual medley (2:02.20) and Morgan Richter in the 100 butterfly (:54.13).

It wasn’t until the 100 free, which was the seventh event for the men, that a Goucher swimmer or relay didn’t finish in the top spot, although Davis was the runner-up (:50.01).

Colin Richter picked up a second win when he was clocked at :56.76 in the 100 backstroke; Morgan Richter added a third with his winning time of 4:57.72 in the 500 free.

The Goucher entry that placed second in the 400 medley relay (3:53.54) included Colin Richter, Nelson, Ben Shriner (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) and Gerber.
