College Swimming: After the final day of the Triple Duals, the No. 15 University of Minnesota men’s swimming and diving team improved to 7-1 on the season. The Gophers took down No. 18 Purdue, 209-144, and Wisconsin, 196-157.
CJ Smith earned the only first-place finish on the day for the Gophers in the 500 free with a time of 4:26.34.
The Gophers 200 free relay, made up of Derek Toomey, Ben Griggs, Felix Samuels and Hrvoje Capan came in second behind Purdue with a time of 1:22.17. The relay also earned second-place honors in the 400 free relay (3:00.57).
On the diving side, Mikey Ross came in second-place on the 1-meter board with a score of 355.90, while Manny Pollard finished in third with a 346.80.
Minnesota finished in the 2 and 3 spots in the 400 IM. Brandon Hatanaka earned the runner-up spot with a time of 3:57.86 and Luke Bushman came in third, touching the wall at 4:00.09.
Toomey and Capan also earned second and third-place finishes for the Gophers in the 100 free. Toomey finished in 45.15 for second while Capan followed with a time of 45.48.
In the 200 breast, Josh Hall came in a close second-place with a 2:01.87, only .03 seconds behind Wisconsin’s Nick Schafer. Max Cartwright (2:02.21) and Jared Anderson (2:02.59) followed, earning third and fourth-place finishes.
GOPHER WOMEN
After the final day of the Quad Duals, the No. 16 University of Minnesota women’s swimming and diving team remains undefeated. The Gophers took down No. 19 Wisconsin, 210-143, No. 25 Purdue, 268-85, and Illinois, 291-62.
Kierra Smith led the Gophers with two victories on the day. The freshman won the 400 IM with a time of 4:22.51 as well as the 200 breast at 2:14.49. Haley Spencer came in second in the 200 breast behind Smith with a time of 2:16.37.
In the 100 fly, sophomore Becca Weiland claimed the title with a time of 53.77. Kiera Janzen also earned a victory for the Gophers in the 500 free, touching the wall at 4:51.50.
The Gophers remained on top in the diving events for the weekend. Sarah McCrady earned first-place in 1-meter diving with a 297.85 while Jessica Ramberg finished in second with a score of 288.25.
Minnesota earned second-place honors in both relays on the day. The 200 free relay, made up of Weiland, Lauren Votava, Erin Caflisch and Tess Behrens finished with a time of 1:32.17. The 400 free relay, made up of Votava, Caflisch, Jessica Plant and Tori Simenec came in second at 3:20.92.
The Gophers host the Minnesota Challenge next weekend at the University Aquatic Center.
