Former Manchester United Chief Watkins to Chair British Swimming

British Swimming has turned to the country’s most successful sport in search of a leader for a sport that struggled among the greatest at the Olympics and have announced Michael Watkins as the new Chariman of British Swimming.

Watkins comes to swimming after serving for 28 years on the board of the world’s most popular soccer club, Manchester United, including as their Director. He is also the Director of the British Association for Sport & Law and has a background in cricket as well.

“I am delighted to have been asked to become Chairman of British Swimming,” Watkins said of his first venture into Olympic and Paralympic sport. “It is an honour and a privilege. I look forward to working alongside people who are an inspiration in such an outstanding sports.”

This role is not so much a technical, sporting role as it is an administrative role that focuses on the business aspects of the sport. Still vacant are the two roles that direct the performance of the  elite ranks that were vacated by Michael Scott and Denis Purseley after the Olympics.
