Fairfield Sweeps Manhattan, With Three Dual Winners Across Men and Women

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Manhattan College on Friday afternoon with the men posting a 219-33 score and the women registering a 207-40 score.

The men’s team had two dual winners in Ed Hunt and Joseph Stewart while the women’s squad Serafina Viola earned a pair of victories. Hunt scored first-place swims in the 200 free by touching the wall in 1:56.27 and garnering the top spot in the 200 back with a time of 2:09.15. Stewart secured first place finishes in the 200 fly with a time of 2:09.45 and in the 200 IM by taking the distance in 2:12.06. Viola was best in the 100 free by navigating her way to a mark of 1:06.84 and in the 200 back by covering the distance in 2:23.37.

The Stags nearly swept every event on both sides of the ledger as the women won 11 more events in front of Viola’s wins. Nine male swimmers were responsible for top points in their respective events to account for Fairfield’s win.

Winners for the women’s team included Laina Bayles in the 800 free (9:40.53), Alexandra Miko-Rydzaj in the 100 breast (1:17.59), Ameila Sicignano in the 200 fly (2:28.05), Maddie Mowad in the 50 free (28.40), Lily Barker in the 100 free (1:01.63), Gabriella Tejeda in the 200 breast (2:51.72), Erini Pappas in the 400 free (4:32.54), Sydney Scalise in the 100 fly (1:06.67), and Shannon Feeley in the 200 IM (2:32.42).

Winners for the men’s team were comprised by Jay Nizzardo in the 800 free (8:48.38), Peter Gori in the 100 free (1:02.04), Peter Sloan in the 100 breast (1:05.82), Will Robinson in the 50 free (25.16), Chris Ford in the 100 free (55.10), Hans Lim in the 200 breast (2:28.19), Evan Fair in the 400 free (4:15.43), and Chris Crumbley in the 100 fly (1:01.63).

All four relay teams also earned captured first in their respective events, beginning with the men’s and women’s victories in the 200 Medley Relay. The men’s grouping tagged a time of 1:49.17 behind the efforts of Fair, Jack Shashaty, Lim, and Gori. The women’s foursome used their clocking of 2:03.81 for the win which consisted of Viola, Mowad, Sicignano, and Pappas.

The 200 Free Relay was equally successful with the women winning the event in 1:51.47 as Pappas, Olivia Thompson, Viola and Sicignano working for the win. On the men’s side, Thomas Willemse, Lim, Robinson, and Hunt combined for a winning time of 1:40.61.

For the men, the victory represented the fifth straight victory while the decision improved the women’s overall record to 4-2.

The Fairfield University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will close out the weekend by hosting Iona College on Saturday afternoon with the seniors being honored prior to the meet.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Manhattan men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams took on Fairfield on Friday. The men fell to the Stags 219-33 and the women lost 207-40.

The lone for Manhattan on Friday came from Mackenzie Tuttle in the 200m freestyle. The junior finished in 2:12.35 to beat Erin Hoyland of Fairfield to the wall by six-tenths of a second. Tuttle swam the final 50m in 33.60 compared to Hoyland’s 34.29.

Tuttle finished second in the 100m freestyle. Lily Barker clipped Tuttle by four-tenths with a 1:01.63. Barker was four-tenths quicker over the first 50m. Tuttle was third in the 100m butterfly with a 1:09.38, which was just under three seconds off the winning time.

Kayla Guilfoil was second in the 200m backstroke for the Jaspers. The sophomore finished in 2:27.91 to secure four points.

On the men’s side, Joe Brennan touched the wall in 1:05.89 to claim second in the 100m breaststroke. The freshman lost out to Fairfield senior Peter Sloan by seven hundredths.

Jack Martin was third in the 100m butterfly. The sophomore stopped the clock in 1:02.8, which was less than a second off the winning time from Chris Chumbley.

The Jaspers return to the water on Saturday, Jan. 29 at Iona in the last meet for the MAAC Championships.
